Divergent

Project: Create-Your-Own Faction DUE DATE: Monday, October 22 (Tuesday, October 23 for 4th period) o *If you are not here to present, you will have to do a separate project involving an essay to make-up the grade! Context: In Divergent, the government decided that the society would be better off if they were divided into groups based on their personality. As Marcus said at the Choosing Ceremony, Decades ago our ancestors realized that it is not political ideology, religious belief, race, or nationalism that is to blame for a warring world. Rather, they determined that it was the fault of human personalityof humankinds inclination toward evil, in whatever form that is. They divided into factions that sought to eradicate those qualities they believed responsible for the worlds disarray (Roth 42). The factions that they create in the book are the Dauntless (who are brave), the Erudite (who are intelligent), the Abnegation (who are selfless), and the Candor (who are honest). However, your task is to create a NEW faction and to persuade your classmates that it would be the best faction to join. Your Task: You will create a presentation for the class. Your purpose is to persuade your classmates that your faction is the best one. In your presentation, you will: o NAME the faction with a cool name (use a dictionary and thesaurus) and break down the meaning of the word. Explain the characteristics of people in that faction. o Explain the similarities and differences between your faction and Dauntless (using textual support from the novel). You may also compare it to the other factions in the book. o Select and research a historical figure that would be in the faction. Present your figure and explain why s/he would fit into that faction. o Cite your sources on a works cited page using MLA formatting (at the end of your presentation). o Your presentation should take 8-10 minutes. NOTES: o You must make a visual to go with your presentation. You may make a powerpoint or a prezi (its free for students at Prezi.com) to go with your presentation. o Remember that you should be talking to the audience. DO NOT READ the entire presentation to us! It should be practiced and you should be taking turns talking to the class about the information. o Use OWL at Purdue University to help you with the citations. Look at the MLA section. For the works cited page, look especially at: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/05/ AND for electronic sources, look at: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/08/ List your group members and their contact info here: NAME Phone Number Email Identify some times that you can meet to work on this and specify your individual tasks below. I will be here TUESDAY AND THURSDAY after school (with computers reserved) to help with this!
