WAS THERE LIFE BEFORE GOOGLE? As history goes, no one thinks that the world would be the same without Google. According to some, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were not terribly fond of each other when they first met at the university, as graduate students, in computer science in 1995. Their strong opinions and different viewpoints would eventually find common ground in a unique approach to solving one of the biggest challenges of computing: obtaining relevant information from a massive set of data. By January of 1996, both had begun collaboration on a search engine called BackRub that permitted them to find any given website. Larry, who had always enjoyed working with machinery, took on the task of creating new kind of server environment that used cheap PCs instead of big expensive machines. The rest is history. Google has grown since it was first set up. It moved from the borrowed garage and computers to a multimillion dollar complex manned by more than 13,000 employees. 1.
