SACSA Learning Area ICT

Learning Area Design and Technology General Capabilities: Literacy/ICT/Critical and creative thinking/ Scope- Designing

Learners develop and use operational skills in information and communication technologies to critically design and construct texts, search for and sort information, and communicate with others. This learning is evident in design and technology when children use computer-aided design, simulation, animation and presentation applications, when they select and maintain hardware and when they investigate and research the intentions and consequences of technology. Key Ideas: Children recognise and use different ways of thinking; planning and preparing that are helpful in achieving and presenting their designs. They learn that by designing it is possible to effect change. [F] [T] [C] [KC1] [KC2] [KC3] Children use different strategies, including using a range of technologies, for successfully reflecting on, communicating and expressing to others their design ideas and thinking. Content: Creating a design of their moving object on kidpix computer program Experience: 1. While in the classroom gather children on mat & remind them of the moving object we have been planning and designing. (Go through the pictures to remind them what they thought of to design & make). 2. Explain that we can design something in more than one way. We have already drawn a picture of our object, but we could also design it in other ways too computer, model, writing. Ask why we might want to do this how would it help our final construction? 3. Explain that today we will be designing our moving object on the computer using the kidpix program. 4. Model doing this in the classroom showing the correct tabs to get into the program and the appropriate icons to use while using kidpix. Show them how to add a text box and ask them to also write their name & what their object is and what makes it move. 5. Take the children to the computer room and let them design. 6. Monitor the room, giving assistance where needed. 7. Ask questions to lead to understanding.

Organisation: Have initial drawing available to remind children of their design idea. Materials/Resources: ICT suite Space: ICT suite Time: 45mins Children/Grouping: whole class
