Case 1: The Farmers Market

Overview By the end of this activity students will be able to: Know and understand farmers market vocabulary through a game and quiz.

Objectives

Given the farmers market vocab words and pictures students will be able to define the vocabulary. The students will be able to identify all of the farmers market items given.

Teaching Standards1

Students learning English as a second language will use English to acquire, interpret, apply, and transmit information for content area learning and personal use. They will develop and use skills and strategies appropriate to their level of English proficiency to collect data, facts, and ideas; discover relationships, concepts, and generalizations; and use knowledge generated from oral, written, and electronically produced texts. 1 Required materials include: Fly Swatters Vocab Sheet (with definitions) Enlarged pictures of vocab words with definition on the back Vocab quiz 1. Handout vocab sheet and explain to the class they will be learning about an American farmers market 2. Start class by describing what a farmers market is. 3. paper with the Spanish words (paper attached). 4. After introduction to the vocab list they will proceed to play the Fly Swatter Game. (The English words are written on the board and the students are divided into two teams. Each team is given a fly swatter. The teacher will read off a Spanish vocab word and the student with the fly swatter from each team will race to find and swat the English word that correlates with it. The teacher will then keep points for each team.) 5. The winning team will receive a piece of candy. 6. With ten minutes left to spare have the students turn their papers over and number their papers one to fifteen. Then the teacher will read off the Spanish word and the students will write the English word. They must complete this assignment before they leave, and exit card. 7. Allow students to ask questions over material if there are any. 8. If time permits on the next day give students attached quiz. If there is no time for the quiz give it to them as homework. The kids will be assessed by their full participation and accuracy in the game. They will be assessed by their accuracy in writing and knowing English vocab words on their paper.
