Campus/District:Royse City High School Date: October 8, 2013 Royse City Independent School District Overall Goal of Lesson: The primary goal of teaching no racquet tennis is for the students to learn rules, alignment, and scoring for the game of tennis. Instructional Objectives: The objective of the no racquet tennis lesson is to teach students how to accurately keep score, align accordingly, and eventually play and complete a set of tennis versus another student. Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) & ELPS: Key Vocabulary: Net, Baseline, Singles sideline, Doubles 116.56. Team Sports (c) Knowledge and skills. (A) evaluate risks and safety factors that may affect sport preferences Higher Order Questions: When holding the racquet and preparing for a Forehand, the racquet head should be at approximately what angle? The head of the racquet should be at approximately a 45* down angle. Student Activities: Students will begin with jogging two warm-up laps around the gym, they will then perform 15 pushups, sit-ups, and body weight squats while being led by a volunteer student leader. Students will then be reminded of the previous days lesson and safety precautions of using racquets and being outside. Students will then be walked to the courts and introduced to the layout of the tennis court. They will be informed of the above listed terminology, when it is used, and what it is used for. After, learning the places on the court the students will be shown briefly a game of tennis and how it is scored. They will then be introduced to no racquet tennis a game in which is played by the rules of tennis but without using racquets. Students serve by throwing overhand to the correct service court, the receiver must catch it in the air or after one bounce and then return it with an underhand toss. (repeat until a score is made) Score is kept according to the rules and scoring of tennis. The students will then be split into groups of four and allowed to play a game of no racquet doubles tennis while following rules and scoring as explained. Modifications/ELL Strategies: If and when needed students could use a smaller playing area. Bigger racquet. Posters, videos, or translations by another student. Time: 8 :359 :20 Anticipatory Activity for Lesson: Shaking hands, this activity will literally be shaking hands with other students while I explain and remind the students of properly holding a racquet. Students will be reminded of not shaking the racquet to firmly and also not holding it too softly.

Teacher Input/Lesson Activity: Students will be informed of the above listed terminology, when it is used, and what it is used for. Guided Practice: Direct the students in keeping score and following the rules of a game of tennis.

Independent Practice: Students will practice basic grip and holding of the racquet by shaking hands, bouncing a ball on a racquet to themselves, and bouncing a ball with a racquet into the ground under control. Lesson Closure: Remind the students that just like any other sport or activity it takes practice and piecing together or many parts in order to be able to perform a complete match or set of tennis. Assessment Methods/Strategies: Assessments can be made by watching for correct grip, following of rules and procedures, and an exit slip reviewing terminology of the game that was discussed in the lesson. Resources (supplies, equipment, software, etc.): Gym, tennis courts, tennis racquets, tennis balls,

Reflection: It is essential that students are reminded of safety and proper gym and tennis court etiquette. As well as being a team player and good sport.
