Wilson 1 Lexi Wilson Professor H English 114A 6 November 2013 Word Count: 734 Argument Analysis As American citizens

we always seem to hear about immigration, whether it is legal or illegal immigrants. In the article, Will Congress reform the nations immigration laws this year? It talks about many different immigrant issues. The article starts off with talking about how the Hispanic votes for Obama have rose because of a new immigration reform that allows undocumented immigrants to stay in the United States and become citizens. Hispanics also have a higher vote for Obama because he said it was okay to have illegal immigrants who were doing well and have good morals. While, Romney wanted more laws and self-deportation. The government wants to start a bipartisan bill that would bolster border security while providing a path to citizenship for most undocumented immigrants (cqpress). It will be called the Gang of Eight bill. If the bill passes in about five years the Department of Homeland Security will set up a monitor system of the U.S. border that will catch a majority of people crossing illegally and dangerously. By doing this it will create more temporary work visas in high-tech and agriculture fields. The government would also speed up the implementation of the governments e-verify online employee-checking system (cqpress), which will make sure that business hire legal immigrants. Although all these might seem a little over the top it will allow immigrants of good character to stay and slowly but surely improve their

Wilson 2 status as an legal immigrant. Although our country is trying to help immigrants come to the United States documented there has been a decline in crossing. Over the past five years it has declined because of the economic recession giving us a shortage of jobs espeically in construction. Not only is this decline because of the recession but also because the build up of security has increased making it more difficult for people to cross in to the United States. Another common issue that was present in this article is that in a few state laws it says that if anyone looks like they are an undocumented person they can be asked to show their papers. This is an issue because it shows that people can use stereotypes to accuse a certain race. This created problems with the state federal and on how we treat eachother. Even though we have these problems in our country America is a country made of immigrants. Immigrants of all kinds, but the Hispanic population is growing and we need to make sure that everyone is having equal oppournities. The argument being made in this article is that the new bill is supposed to be passed and it will help undocumented immigrants to stay in the United States. Throughout this article there are several different types of evidence shown that help support the authors claim. There are many different statistics on immigration and how it is affecting our country. It also talked about politicians and what they have to say about certain facts. Lastly, there are specific dates and examples that help support the claim of the new bill. The Gang of Eight bill does not seem like it will create a major impact. It seems that it is adding more to the system and creating more laws and regulations that will take a lot of time to be passed. It seems that the bill is promising something that will not happen. The article states that it will take thirteen years for one to become a

Wilson 3 documented immigrant and that it should be available for most immigrants but not all. It seems to be a false argument. The authors position on the issue seems to be in support of the Gang of Eight bill. The author shows it in a positive light, that does not say anything negative or demining to the topic. It even shows Obama and the Democrats in a brighter light. It shows Romney and Republicans in a more negative sense. The author talks about how Republicans will not be willing to bend their opinions on the issue and want illegal immigrants to go back home. While it shows Democrats as being open and caring to illegal immigrants by giving them more of a chance to make a life for themselves in our country. There should be an easier way for illegal immigrants to become documented and the new bill does not seem to be the answers to all immigrants problems.
