Anas Ahmed Kristen Foster CO 150 10/23/2013 Does Immigration Do More Harm than Good? An Annotated Bibliography This annotated bibliography was compiled as part of my research on Immigration for my composition class. Immigration being a controversial and exigent topic fulfilled the requirements which I needed to write this annotated bibliography. Immigration has been a controversial topic for a while as different stakeholders are at risk. The main reason why it is controversial is because some people believe that immigration decreases job opportunities for locals and on the contrary supporters of immigration says that it helps countrys economy. Being an international student and an alien in the US this controversial topic is important to me as I believe that I am part of this controversy. The research question which helped me in this research is: Does immigration do more harm than good? I conducted my research between the dates of October 3 and October 20th. This annotated bibliography contains four sources, one from academic article, and three from web articles. Doak, Melissa J. "The Impact of Immigration on the United States in the 21st Century." Immigration and Illegal Aliens: Burden or Blessing?. Melissa J. Doak. 2011 ed. Detroit: Gale, 2011. 101-113. Information Plus Reference Series. Gale Virtual Reference Library. Web. 20 Oct. 2013. This scholarly article talks about contribution of immigrants in the US economy. This article mostly focuses on the contributions made by

immigrants and provides figures relating to immigrants contributions in the US economy. According to the author Small Business Administration estimates that immigrants are 30% more likely to start businesses than are native-born individuals (page 105). This article also gives list of billionaire entrepreneur who are immigrants. According to the author immigrants have filled the job gaps which were left unfilled by locals and instead of stealing jobs from locals, immigrants have created job opportunities in various fields such as language translators. Melissa J. Doak is a social welfare writer and has written several books on social issues. This is a credible source as it is from peer review journal and was published recently. This article is quiet relevant to my topic as it answers my research question on immigrants and helps me find the answers of what I am looking for. The stakeholders at question in this article are immigrants. Griswold, Daniel. "Immigrants Have Enriched American Culture and Enhanced Our Influence in the World." Cato Institute. Cato Institute, 18 Feb 2002. Web. 16 Oct. 2013. Daniel

Griswolds, February 2002 article, published by the CATO institute, Immigrants have enriched American Culture and Enhanced our influence in the World provides key insight into how immigrants is an integral part of the American culture. Griswold states that it is immigrants that give the United States an economic edge in the world economy. Griswold attributes this edge to the immigrants innovative ideas, outside the box thinking and entrepreneurial thinking. Griswold also challenges the popular myth that immigrants push Americans out of jobs, stating that immigrants tend to fill jobs which otherwise Americans cannot fill themselves. Griswold also states that Canada is prospering because of immigrants and if the United States was to shut its doors to

immigrants the result can prove to be disastrous. Griswold concludes that immigrants come to the United States to live the America Dream; while terrorists come to destroy it. CATO is an American Libertarian think tank headquarters in Washington D.C. which focuses on public advocacy, media exposure and societal influence. Daniel Griswold is the director of the CATO institute and has authored numerous studies on trade and immigration policy. Due to these factors the source can be considered quite credible. The stakeholder which the article mostly concentrates on is the United States of America. The article is relevant to my topic at hand as it provides key points on how beneficial immigrants are for the United States of America. Lehman, Thomas. "Coming to America: The Benefits of Open Immigration." : The Freeman : Foundation for Economic Education. N.p., 01 Dec. 1995. Web. 16 Oct. 2013. Thomas Lehmans, December 1995 article, published by FEE, Coming to America: The Benefits of Open Immigration states how America owes its heritage to open borders. Lehman talks on how Immigration is proven to be beneficial to United States Labor force, welfare, culture and freedom. Lehman argues that although immigration makes the American labor force more competitive, it is beneficial for the economy because competitiveness promotes motivation and hence lowers cost of production. Lehman, surprisingly, also mentions that the answer to the countries welfare problems can be resolved by eliminating the American welfare altogether and prohibiting anyone, native or immigrant, from living at the coerced expense of another. According to Lehman, America was built on immigrants and sealing them off would only go against our history and culture. Lehman advocates for immigrants stating the United States is built on freedom, and hence must begin to accept the fact that free trade and open borders are to

their utmost benefit. Lehman further continues that by expanding into international marketplaces, everyones living standards will improve. FEE is an American organization which promotes the principles of laissez-faire economics, private property and limited government to students. Its articles and information is widely utilized by various economists around the world making it quite credible. The stakeholders at question in this article are the immigrants. The article is quite relevant to my topic because it provides immigrants opinions on the matter. Tomlinson, Simon. "Revealed: How Immigrants in America Are Sending $120 BILLION to Their Struggling Families Back Home." Mail Online. Associated Newspapers Ltd, 31 Jan 2013. Web. 17 Oct. 2013. Simon Tomlinson in his article Revealed: How immigrants in America are sending $120 BILLION to their struggling families back home", published in UK news agency Dailymail, talks about the economic disadvantages of immigration. People argue that, immigrants are beneficial to a country, as they work different jobs in the host county; however, they fail to realize that most of these working immigrants remit their income back to their families. According to the author, this results in the transfer of wealth from the host country to the expatriates native country, which has a negative impact on the countys economy. Simon Tomlinson writes articles for Dailymail, and his writings focus on international topics. This article presents the economic disadvantage of immigration in a nice manner, as it also contains fact and statistics. I can use this source for the economic arguments of immigration. The stakeholders at question in this article are immigrants.
