THE PROPERTIES
! The Distributive Property is when one distributes a number with another number. It would be the first number multiplied/divided by the second number, but broken in down in two and added by the first number multiplied by the broken down number. Example: 210= 25+25 ! The Associative Property of Multiplication/Addition is when the parentheses are moved from one place to another. This only occurs in multiplication and addition Example: 5+(4+8)=(5+4)+8 ! The Commutative Property of Addition/Multiplication is when a number changes its places with another number. 879=987

SIMPLIFYING AN EXPRESSION

4(7x-3)+2x ! This expression is simple to solve: ! First Distribute 4 to the numbers in the parentheses 28x-12+2x ! Next combine the numbers that have the same format 30x-12 ! Thats the answer, 30x-12! ! It cant be simplified to one number since it is an expression, not an equation.

SIMPLIFYING AN EQUATION

7x-10-9x=-13 First combine the terms that are in the same format. -2x-10=-13 Now its a regular two-step equation, solve. -2x=-3 When you divide, just leave it as a fraction or mixed number. Since the numerator and denominator are both negatives they become both positives. X=-3/-2= 1 !

SIMPLIFYING A FRACTION EQUATION

First, you need to make the fractions into whole numbers

Put the products under to make an equation

To do that, you must multiply the numbers by a number that they both go into.

Now Combine and Solve.

Thats the answer,x=2! Note: You can just add/subtract the fractions, but this is easier.

-4x+4"-8 This is a lot like a regular two-step equation, but has a small change. First subtract four from each sides. -4x"-12 Then, divide -4 from each sides. x"-3 You think youre done? No! Because you multiplied (or divided) a negative number, the value changes. The True answer is x#-3. But youre still not finished! You have to graph it!
