Dont Neglect the Planet We Should Respect
Genre is used to categorize any type of text. It can be used to broaden an audience or
narrow it. The original text used was a COVERGIRL advertisement trying to sell a natural lip
balm. It featured Taylor Swift as the model portraying the natural lip balm being advertised.
Included in the ad was a brief description of the product at the bottom left hand corner, but not so
much that it takes away from the natural look Taylor Swift is conveying with the product.
Finally shown is the actual product in the bottom right hand corner, which is the last image seen
before leaving the page. This advertisement was displayed in a fashion magazine, limiting the
audience to only women or young ladies. This limitation of audience is unfortunate to the
message being brought upon by this advertisement, which is, natural elements are better than
manmade elements. To alter the audience from the advertisement the genre can easily be
changed to post impressionism art to broaden the audience to all genders.
The genre that was chosen to re-create the COVERGIRL advertisement was a
postimpressionism painting. Postimpressionism paintings usually include still life or landscape,
which would be appropriate to portray the same message the original text tried to portray,
however it will broaden the audience to all genders. This is appropriate for the message being
brought by the COVERGIRL ad because paintings in this genre are usually inspired by still life
or landscapes. The idea was to create a painting that can bring the same message understood by
the ad but to a different audience. Colors were used to portray the different emotions brought out

in the natural scene and the manmade scene. The message portrayed by the COVERGIRL
advertisement is that natural elements are better than manmade elements that are overcoming our
world now. To the left is a greenery scene with bright green trees and healthy growing plants,
bright blue skies and some living creatures. On the other hand, towards the right side the viewer
will see a factory creating pollution and cars creating pollution, concluding to a more grey sky
and muggy feeling in the atmosphere.
What people expect from paintings in general is to open up the viewers mind about a
serious conflict. Paintings open up the viewers perspective of a conflict by presenting it in a
artistic way which will not limit the minds analytical thinking since art in general has endless
possibilities and meanings. The particular audience for this type of painting is mainly targeted to
those who appreciate art, however it applies to any gender unlike the original text. Even though
not everyone appreciates or takes the time out of their day to visit an art gallery, the message is
seen by a select few and those individuals will share their experience with others. The painting
opens up the minds of the people in our society today about how our world has changed since
mankind started interfering with nature by adding their created elements to the planet. Pollution
today is the biggest issue globally today and by creating a painting that portrays that message, it
will inspire others to prevent more harm to the planet. Pollution destroys not only the air we
breathe but disturbs the lives of other living things like plants and animals. For example, if
humans keep cutting down all the trees to create manmade things such as furniture, paper,
pencils, or even just to make room for another building then there will eventually be no trees left
to help produce clean air. By incorporating a serious situation happening in society, people are
more likely to be interested in the painting because it involves them. With that said, it will

satisfy the audiences expectations because the painting displayed gives off an important
message that impacts every living thing on our planet.
While the genre being recreated broadens the audience to all genders, it also narrows it as
well since those who appreciate art will only see the painting. An individual who is not
interested in artwork will not be interested in this piece because they may not understand the
emotional feel behind art. A painting is not only a pretty picture; it includes a meaningful
message like this one intentionally does. More people would be interested in the subject by
looking at the painting because artwork does not limit the individuals thinking. Artwork does
the exact opposite, it does not limit imagination, and when a person looks at a piece of art a
different meaning may be displayed to them but someone else might have a different perspective
of it. So the painting produced to re-create the message, the ad intentionally had, could create
endless possibilities for the audience.
Colors have a huge role in the painting. Colors trigger human emotions without even
thinking about it, for example red usually triggers hunger, which is why most fast food
restaurants incorporate red somewhere in the dining area as the customer orders. Bright colors
such as greens, blues, yellows, and whites are connected with happiness or pureness. This is
why those same colors were chosen to illustrate the wonderfulness of nature on the left hand
side. To demonstrate how our manmade elements are destroying the planet and give off a less
appealing mood on the right hand side colors such as greys, blacks, browns and even muted
bright colors, which would be dark blues and greens, are used to portray a gloomy mood. These
colors are associated with an upsetting mood because the colors are not as intense as a yellow
would be they are more muted and have a negative vibe to them.

The intended plan was to broaden the audience, by taking the message from a fashion
magazine to an art gallery the audience is open to all genders. The fashion magazine is targeted
to women so women for the most part only saw the advertisement. In an art gallery however all
genders can be interested in the painting being displayed. Although there are a few
complications with the postimpressionism painting, it appropriately represents the same message
being brought by the COVERGIRL advertisement. By incorporating a natural seen with a
manmade element infested scene, the message that natural is better than elements created by
humans is presented clearly. This was successfully made by using different colors to represent
certain emotions throughout the painting. The painting will get the audience to analyze and think
more about the environment and influence them to take care of the natural elements presented to
them today.

Kristie,
Overall, I think this is a strong draft. You make some strong arguments for how the new
text relates to the old one, and I think your discussion of audience is predominantly
thorough. However, I do still think theres a bit of room for expansion. Though you talk in
nice detail about the colors of the painting, Im not sure I can visualize it well. Is the
natural scene on the left and the manmade scene on the right? If so, what is this
representative of? Because, as you say, art is left to interpretation it would be nice to know
how you created it and with what interpretation in mind. Also, why did you choose this
select audience? Yes, you open your viewers to all genders, but since youre also narrowing
audience in certain ways you should probably address how this crowds interpretation
might be important to the paintings overall meaning or theme.
