Libertad! Pero, con problemitas. Liberty! But with a catch. 1.

Standard: Share a detailed description of places and things beyond their immediate environment or in the target culture 2. Objective: a. TLW analyze a written text to determine the process Latin American countries used to gain independence from Spain. 3. Vocabulario1: a. Libertad (liberty) b. Luchar (fight) c. Protestar(protest) 4. Anticipatory Set: Write an answer in Spanish. Why did the USA want freedom (to separate itself) from England? Given what you know about Latin America and the colonization, do you think Latin America wanted freedom from Spain? Defend your answer with two examples. We will start the class by listening to two students answer the question, and review the last two days for about five minutes. 5. Input: a. Read 3 paragraphs of a letter written by Simn Blivar, who was known as the Gran Libertador, or the Great Liberator, who was largely responsible for liberating Northern South America from Spain. Students will then sing Feliz libertad a t (happy freedom to you) to the tune of Happy Birthday. This is not the first or last time the students sing in the class.) i. While reading, we will once again use both selective highlighting and a read aloud. However, the last paragraph will be read silently, the student will read by himself/herself and underline the most important topic. ii. I will include several turn and talk to your partner during the reading, with questions about the reading. b. Students watch mini-clip, with words on bottom, about independence in the early 19 th century. I pre-teach a few vocab words, hand out viewing guide. As the students watch, they will answer questions about the way several countries won independence. We will watch the movie several times. The students will make a graphic organizer to summarize the most important ideas from the reading. 6. Modeling a. I will model what I expect the students to write down during the movie. I will also guide them at first during the selective highlighting. 7. Check for understanding a. Ask frequent questions during the reading. Repeat the question; if necessary write it down for the student to understand it. b. See closure

We will have a five minute discussion of the reading at the end of class. I will use Popsicle sticks to ask students a variety of questions about the country that each student chose to write about.
