Justin Savinon Speech Community Essay

Technology: an endlessly innovating resource and tool used for just about everything in todays world. It could be a new born baby being monitored right out of labor, the parent giving birth is having medication being distributed throughout her body, or whether its the technology that prolongs the grandparents last breath in the room next door. A speech community in which challenges and isolates the elder while strengthening and bringing to together the youth; the virtual speech community through technology. From the abbrevs, acronyms, #hashtags, and "emojis one can inquire so much. Like every speech community there will be its benefits and its disadvantages, but Ill atmpt 2 clrly hlp u fllw my explnatns as well as infrm u on the tpc at hnd. LOL Im gnna b tryin 2 explr this topic and am sure this will hlp! Unfrtntly thr r no translations 4 this speech community so ber w/ me. What is the history behind @technology and how did it adapt in to having a #virtualcommunication #speechcommunity of its own? Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone, had to be convinced that the telephone could be used for communication, rather than merely a tool for transporting reports and symphonies. Much like how television was simply thought to transmit stage plays and variations to radio ads. Overall the internet is still in somewhat of a blossoming stage where the power is being given to the user or consumer. As for communication, the internet began as a method of communication between schools and scientists; thus, beginning the first virtual community. "New and deeper relationships are being built," meaning that people are becoming more and more virtually connected through adapting advances and methods of not only technology, but the communication within as well. Adaption and growth of communication through technology is evident where as I have grown up in a huge

time period of such adaption and growth. It makes me ponder the thought, "what have I experienced technology adapt from and that will allow me to reflect one how it has shaped its own virtual speech community?" Telephones are turning to cellphones. Cellphones are turning into Bluetooth ear pieces. Cell phones are even turning into watches now! With the adaption of technology follows the adaption of how we communicate. We begin to shorten words, paint pictures with stories, tell stories with pictures, and communicate with an increasing simplicity. There is a dark and light side to this growing speech community through taking us through the history and depicting how communicating through texting and such is becoming much more personal than through a simple letter. It is adapting more towards how one would typically speak, yet is also breaking off into a tangent of simplicity. Yet, here is my inquiry, what characteristics of this speech community is different? What sets this community apart from others? Well there are various things that sets this speech community apart from others. Whether its through texting, instant messaging, over a gaming device, or through the use of the previously stated emojis and such, it is pretty obvious when one is using technology or not. Ive only heard of this speech community being judged through key instances such as one being glued to their phone, the use of sexting, accidental sexting, and the occasional nude photo that gets passed around while everyone is LOLing while your BFF Jill is just like OMG what did I do. This speech community can cross over and relate to others when people have the audacity to use acronyms and abbreviations without technology and in every day talk by using Ill *totes be there rather than saying Ill *totally be there. Though that should fall under how to be judged, it is still a prime example of the typically simple minded virtual communication method of speech.

How can virtual communication be so assuring and necessary while over great distances at times and with such little effort? Imagine that two worried parents pace around the kitchen eagerly awaiting the arrival of their child. A simple text message or phone call would have prevented an entire evening of worry and stress. Their daughter went out with a Slim Shady wannabe and they had no idea where she was, if she was ok, when she was coming back, or if she was even alive. With the use of virtual communication a simple (smiley face), brb (be right back), or number such as 8 (implying the time she would roughly return) could settle her parents troubles and worries. It is crazy to think that we have come so far to link each other from distances. Kids are getting more responsibilities at younger ages. Through college, other means of school, traveling, vacation, hanging with friend, jobs, and most importantly keeping in touch it seems that virtually communicating is key towards limiting the distances between family and friends. Kids no longer have to be within shouting distance to know it is time for supper. People no longer need to write pages to depict the same meaning as a <3 might make the recipient feel. Operators for emergency services are even able to reduce the arrival time of police, fire, or medical personal by using acronyms and codes virtually sent out to stations giving information and status of the emergency. Think of how every second counts when responding to emergencies. Virtual communication seems to bring everyone together as emotionally and verbally as possible from such great distances.

From a persons final words, to the rebirth of a kindled fire, to even the birth of a new start; we have now witnessed what virtual communication can do as well as how it looks. One could go to the extent of saying that it is used as somewhat of a social relief. Although it has its dangers and side effects, virtual communication can be socially beneficial. There are people

out there that are already socially awkward. There are people out there that are lonely. There are people out there that feel misunderstood. There are people out there that feel lost. Well communicating virtually through twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Instagram, Skype, OOVOO, dating websites, and etc. can help these people create a more fulfilling social life and destroys the environment which they were once limited to. Putting up a single or ;) up allows one to freely express themselves with minimal thought and effort. It becomes that simple to say what you want. Thus, people begin to feel a little less awkward as they are able to think before they hit send with minimal pressure. People feel included just in case someone else happens to put a somewhere and actually feel like they arent as alone or that someone might actually understand. Some people find themselves with the help of virtual communication. I appreciate your time and attention, but I gtg so ttyl probz LOL .
