1. How do children develop their literacy in their early years? It takes a lot of commitment from parents and caregivers and teachers. As they grow we can help them a long they way. We are the ones who help them the most. 2. Children start developing literacy as early as infancy. Literacy learning begins in infancy and everything we do at this stage of their life will either help or hinder their progress so we need to make sure we are helping as much as we possibly can. 3. Parents can make sure they are helping develop their babys literacy skills as well. The most important thing they can do is read to their baby all the time and make sure they are constantly talking to their child. It can be about anything. 4. Putting labels on everything around the house is a great way to help children learn literacy as well. They can see the toy inside the bins or the drawer and relate it to the word on the outside and eventually be able to understand what they say. 5. Environmental print also helps with early literacy development. Environmental print is familiar print found in our surroundings such as familiar food labels like McDonalds, road signs, like a stop sign, or logos, like the Nike swoosh. 6. Alphabet knowledge is the knowledge of the names of each letter or the alphabet and the sound that each letter makes. This is very important in learning literacy. A child cannot learn to read without knowing their letters and the sounds they make. 7. Phonological awareness is the ability to detect, manipulate, or analyze the auditory aspects of spoken language. This includes segmenting words by syllable or phonemes. For example: dog. /d/o/g/. 8. Rapid automatic naming of letter, digits, objects, or colors is the ability to rapidly name a sequence of random letters or digits, or sets of pictures of objects or colors. This is important in building a childs vocabulary. 9. Writing letters and writing ones name is important as well. A child should be able to write letters in isolation before learning to write more words. A child should also learn to write their own name very early on. 10. Phonological memory is the ability to remember spoken information for a short period of time. A child should be able to remember something you tell them or a short story they hear for the time being. 11. Concepts about print is very important for learning how to read a book. They need to know that they have to read left to right and to start from the front cover and who the author may be. They need to understand this before learning reading.

12. Oral Language is the ability to produce or comprehend spoken language. This includes vocabulary and grammar. If a child is going to learn to read one day they will have to speak and answer questions. It will help them develop early literacy. 13. Visual processing is the ability to match or discriminate visually presented symbols. They need to understand what is being shown to them and they need to be able to copy pictures and show that they are understanding visuals. 14. All of those concepts combined predict achievement in reading and comprehension in children ages birth to 5. Involving children in appropriate activities that support all of those concepts will help them develop significantly in those areas. 15. Literacy development begins early in life and is ongoing. Emergent literacy means that a child has acquired some knowledge about language, reading, and writing before coming to school. 16. Children have their own way of learning and teaching themselves as well. One way is invented spelling. It is a great start and shows that they are trying and sounding out words to spell them. We can always help them improve, what matters is that they are trying. 17. Print motivation is very important as well. Children need to want to read in order to develop literacy. We need to make them want to read in any way we possibly can. We need to motivate them and make them want to read. 18. Narrative skills are important. Children need to be able to talk fluently. They need to be able to tell stories based on a picture. 19. Lastly vocabulary is important as well. Children start building a vocabulary very young. From their first word they are building vocabulary and it is important for us to help them develop it constantly. 20. Everything we do with children from infancy to preschool years helps build literacy. It is very important that we know what to do along the way to make sure that they develop those skills and want to learn and read one day.
