White Board with markers Conducting Baton Students parts Instruments Procedure 1. Begin the class by welcoming the students back from Thanksgiving break. a. Ask the students how many have practiced, and this should be a good gauge of where the students should be with each piece. 2. Start the class with the First Band clinic warm up. a. Here it would be best to spend a good deal of time working through individual exercises to get the students playing together again. b. Spend a good deal of time on the Courtland Chorale working on bringing out dynamics, and blending with other instruments. c. Ask the students for things they have done well, and things they think they could do better, and work to get the students to fix the problems by finding them through this questioning. 3. After the students have gone through the warm up, begin by explaining that this is the week of the concert, and they will be fine tuning parts of the music, and working to get ready to play. a. Ask the students what they want to sound like while playing in front of their parents. b. Have the students explain strategies they can use to reach these goals. c. Explain to the students that we are going to do a complete run through. . d. Explain that the expectation is for the students to treat this like a real performance. 4. Begin the run through, and keep a checklist of sections that will need to be returned to for some reinforcement work. 5. Once the run through is complete have the students talk about things they did well, and things that they think could be done better. a. Have students talk about strategies they can think of to work through these problem areas. i. Add some input and feedback as well. ii. After they have given ideas, tell them how they will be working on the problems. 6. Allow the students a brief five minute break to get water. 7. Go to the section of Christmas Serenade with the students where the becomes 6/8. a. Explain that both of these time signatures are both triple meter, and that in 6/8 instead of counting the quarter note we will be counting the eighth. b. Have the students count 6/8 while you sing the piece for them, then reverse the roles. c. Then while you count the meter for them, have them play the piece. d. Finally have them play while you conduct. 8. Work on other areas

a. Deck - Measure 33 i. Focus on articulation particularly, and dynamics. b. Wonderland - Measure 47 i. Focus on the dynamics and making this section work well. ii. Continue to work on swing. c. Fantasia - focus on working out the trumpet part, and getting the dynamics to speak more in the section around 58 d. Serenade - work on the transition between and 6/8. i. Also continue work on dynamics especially in those section where everyone plays loud. 9.
