Bruce English 360 Conference 2: Portfolio Preparation

What to Bring: o This worksheet, completed (also upload it to Titanium) o Any documents youre considering including in your portfolio.

Questions: 1. As you can see on our Portfolio Instruction Sheet (available on Titanium), each students portfolio must include one fully revised, major assignment (blog posting, profile, or persuasive essay). Review your work and my comments on these assignments. Which of these documents are you most interested in revising, and why? Which of our student learning outcomes (see page one of our syllabus) could you satisfy by revising this document (and yes, it can satisfy more than one)? Where will you have to focus your revision efforts to produce a document that will satisfy your standards? I have been in the middle about what major assignment I want to use for my portfolio. It was between revising my blog post and using my persuasive essay. One reason why I want to use my blog is because I received the best grade on it out of all of our assignments and it is a personal favorite. My blog post would meet SLOs 1 and 5. But if I were to use my persuasive essay it would almost meet the entire list of student learning outcomes. I do need to make revisions to both regardless of what one I would use. If I decided to use my persuasive the changes I would need to make is revising my introduction, shorten my quotes, and add more support to back up my claims. If I used my blog I would need to add citations to fulfill more SLOs as well as elaborating on my quotations. 2. Your portfolio team should meet to discuss which major assignment each of you intends to revise. First, each student should pitch their assignment choice to their peers, arguing for its ability to satisfy our SLOs and stating your purpose in revising this document instead of one of the others. Below, summarize your peers comments and suggestions about your choice. Do they agree or disagree with you, and why? How did they advise you? Which SLOs do your peers think your chosen assignment will satisfy? What kinds of revisions do they suggest? After pitching my assignment to Chris he told me that my blog would be a good choice although it does not cover a majority of the SLOs as another assignment would. He pointed out that it could potentially meet 1, 4, and 5 of the SLOs with some additional revision. I would need to use other assignments such as my annotated bibliography to show that I have met the other 2 SLOs. I also mentioned to Chris with my idea of using my persuasive essay for my profile and he thought It would be a good idea as well. He feels that with revisions the overall nature of the essay will assist in meeting more SLOs rather than my blog. I personally agree with him just because the essay will be more formal and it is easier to show informal work though other assignments that I have done throughout the course.
