Nina Simone

Nina Simone, de son vrai nom Eunice Waymon, est sans aucun doute, l'une des plus grandes chanteuses amricaines de jazz et plus largement une artiste majeure du 20e sicle. Elle nat le 21 fvrier 1933, Tyron en Caroline du Nord, dans une famille de pasteurs mthodistes. Trs jeune, elle commence prendre des cours de piano et prpare le concours d'entre du Curtis Institute of Music de Philadelphie. Recale en raison de la couleur de sa peau, elle ne renonce pas pour autant et suit des cours la Julliard School de New York. Malgr son dsir dtre une pianiste classique, elle va chanter le blues et le jazz dans les clubs enfums. Elle adopte le nom de Nina Simone par admiration pour Simone Signoret. En 1957, elle enregistre son premier album Little Girl Blue. Au dbut des annes 60, elle enregistre neuf albums pour le label Candix et milite activement pour le Mouvement des Droits Civiques, aux cts de Martin Luther King ou Malcolm X. Les annes 70 vont tre marques par la sortie de nombreux albums et surtout par sa retraite anticipe. Elle s'exile au Libria pour quelques annes. Nina Simone revient en 1987, avec une interprtation bouleversante de Ne me quitte pas de Jacques Brel. En 1991, elle signe sa biographie I Put a Spell on You. Son dernier album majeur, A single woman, sort en 1993. Le 21 avril 2003, alors ge de 70 ans, Nina Simone meurt dans sa proprit ct de Marseille.
