Various Voices
Dublin 2014
Introduction/
7
Dear fellow choristers,
I am delighted to introduce The
Irish Songbook, commissioned
specially for the Various Voices
Dublin 2014 Festival. Various
Voices, under the patronage of
Legato, the European Organisa-
tion of Lesbian and Gay choirs, is
organised and hosted by a differ-
ent European city every 4 years.

We produced the songbook to
give each and every choir partici-
pating in the Festival an oppor-
tunity to learn at least one Irish
song from the book, and so that
all delegates could get into the
spirit of Irish culture. Craic agus
Cel (Fun and Music) is at the
heart of Irish culture and we want
everyone to experience both
during the Festival and its great
social programme. So go on, get
learning!
The songbook comprises xxx
traditional and contemporary Irish
songs, arranged for choral singing
mostly in 4 part harmonies. The
composers and arrangers who
wrote the pieces are acknowl-
edged throughout the book, and
a short biography of each person
has been printed. We are very
grateful to all of the composers
and arrangers who contributed,
they donated their time, expertise
and skill free of charge and gave
us permission to print and distrib-
ute their work.
A big thank you also is due to
IMRO (Irish Music Rights Organi-
sation) who funded this booklet
in its entirety and without whom
it would not have happened.
Thanks also to Shay Hennessy
and Ian Doyle who compiled and
produced the book, and fnally,
thanks to Mario Quintana who
designed the booklet .

All of these people have donated
their time and expertise free of
charge.
Now all that is left for me to say
is irigh Amhrn a R! (Arise
and Sing!)
Now all that is left for me to say
is irigh Amhrn a R! (Arise
and Sing!)
All the best from myself, and
the entire VVD 2014 organising
committee see you in Dublin in
June 2014.

Chair, Various Voices Dublin 2014
About Various Voices Dublin 2014
The 2014 Festival, hosted by
Gloria, Irelands frst Lesbian and
Gay Choir, has already attracted
70 choirs representing 2,500
delegates, and we are still more
than a year from close of registra-
tion so we expect more people.
Already choirs are registered
from the US, Canada, Australia,
New Zealand, Africa and Europe.
The core of the festival will hap-
pen in Dublin City University, and
some events are also planned for
Dublin City Centre.

Various Voices
Dublin 2014
Words from IMRO/
11
IMRO is delighted to play a part
in bringing the internationally
respected Various Voices pro-
gramme of events to Ireland and
Irish audiences in 2014.

The diversity and quality of music
in Ireland is the most important
ingredient in fostering our repu-
tation of being a dynamic and
culturally rich nation. The suc-
cess of Irish music creators and
writers on the international stage
has contributed signifcantly to
the positive and vibrant image
Ireland enjoys throughout the
world. Since long before the term
existed, the arts have been our
greatest creative industry. Irish
music and artists have been at
the forefront of music creativ-
ity with artists as diverse as The
Cranberries, Bill Whelan, Paul
Brady, Brendan Graham, Ruth
Anne Cunningham, The Script,
Glen Hansard, U2, Van Morrison,
Sinead OConnor, Clannad, Rory
Gallagher, Westlife, and Thin Lizzy
to name a few who are having a
major impact on music makers
and fans alike around the globe.
The cultural impact that Irish
music continues to make globally,
helping to defne who and what
we are as nation, is vast. Long
before the emergence of the
Celtic Tiger success story, Irish
music permeated the internation-
al cultural landscape heralding the
Irish as a nation of creators and
innovators. Indeed Irish music
continues to be one of the signif-
cant infuencing factors attracting
the many foreign tourists visiting
our shores each year.

About IMRO
IMRO is a national organisation
that administers the performing
right in copyright music in Ireland
on behalf of its members (who
are songwriters, composers and
music publishers) and on behalf
of the songwriters, composers
and music publishers of the inter-
national overseas societies that
are affliated to it.
Music users such as broadcast-
ers, venues and businesses must
pay for their use of copyright
music by way of a blanket licence
fee. IMRO collects these mon-
ies and distributes them to the
songwriters, composers and
music publishers who created
the songs. The monies earned
by copyright owners in this way
are known as public performance
royalties.
IMRO is also prominently in-
volved in the sponsorship and
promotion of music in Ireland.
Every year it sponsors a large
number of song contests, music
festivals, seminars, workshops,
research projects and showcase
performances. Indeed, IMRO is
now synonymous with helping
to showcase emerging talent in
Ireland.

Declan ORourke
ORourke was a latecomer to the
Dublin singer-songwriter scene.
But, in his mid-twenties, within
months of discovering Dublins
bustling songwriter open-mic
circuit, Declan ORourke found
himself in the mix with the likes
of Paddy Casey, Gemma Hayes,
Damian Rice and many other Irish
singer-songwriters.
In 2004, Declan released his
debut single, Galileo (Someone
Like You), and has released three
albums to date, including the
double platinum-selling Since
Kyabram (2004), Big Bad Beauti-
ful World (2007) and Mag Pai Zai
(2011).
Declan ORourkes songs have
been recorded by a host of highly
respected, successful artists.
Galileo (Someone Like You) was
recorded by Josh Groban for his
ffth studio album, Illuminations,
produced by Rick Rubin. The song
has also been recorded by Eddi
Reader (MBE), the Scottish song-
stress widely known for her No. 1
UK hit Its Got To Be Perfect. Jac-
qui Dankworth, daughter of Jazz
legends Cleo Laine and Sir John
Dankworth, recorded the song
as well as singers Brian Kennedy,
Paul Byrom and The Celtic Tenors.

Various Voices
Dublin 2014
Sinad Finegan
Sinad Finegan is a violinist and
composer and holds a Masters
in Music and Media Technology
from Trinity College, Dublin.
The musician has an interest in
combining music with literature,
and composed a work based on
the poetry of William Butler Yeats,
entitled Both Beautiful, One a
Gazelle, for the Bal Festival of
Music and Poetry in 2012.
Finegan is currently working on
a new piece for string quartet,
which incorporates old Irish harp
melodies, gathered by Irish folk
music collector Edward Bunting
in the late 1700s.

Various Voices
Dublin 2014
Fiontn
Cearbhaill
Fiontn Cearbhaill was born
in Wexford and moved to Water-
ford as a child. He was em-
ployed as a railway clerk for 27
years, gaining his B.Mus from
Trinity College Dublin through
evening study. Shortly after-
wards he secured a post as
music teacher in the Presenta-
tion Convent Secondary School,
Waterford, which he held until
his death.
In addition to his work as a
school teacher, he was an active
musician, teaching violin and
music theory privately, conduct-
ing three brass bands and lead-
ing a theatre orchestra. He held
the post of organist and choir-
master in a number of churches
in Waterford and latterly at the
Cathedral of the Most Holy Trin-
ity. He was a founder member
of the Irish Church Music Asso-
ciation and was for many years
editor of and a regular contribu-
tor to the associations maga-
zine, Hosanna.
