1.1 Significant Figure 1. Non-zero digits of a postitive number 3. Zeros after the last non- zero digit in a decimal 247.3 (4 sf), 4.8 (2 sf) 0.60 (2 sf), 2.1 (3 sf) 2. Zeros between the non-zero digits of a positive number 607 (3 sf), 4.0051 (5 sf) NOT significant figure 1. Zeros before the first non-zero digit in a decimal 0.007 (1 sf), 0.00065 (2 sf) 2. Zeros after the last non-zero digit in a whole number are not significant figure unless stated. 3200 (2 sf), 3200 (3 sf)

1.2 Standard Form Standard form is a way of writing a number in the form A x 10n ,where 1 A < 10 and n is an integer.

(a) Numbers more than 10 9800 = 9.8 x 103 43610 = 4.361 x 104 (b) Numbers less than 1 0.0072 = 7.2 x 10-3 0.000061 = 6.1 x 10-3
