LIPTON YELLOW LABEL PINK PANTHER The Lipton Yellow Label Pink Panther commercial was created in order

to advertise the brand more in Europe. It was done because sales of the tea were on a decline in this area. In this advertisement, the music has a classical feeling at first and it is then converted to a jazz style. Because of this, many different instruments were heard in this advertisement. Instruments that were heard are the piano, the violin, the viola, the trumpet, the tuba, the trombone, the cello, the French horn, the drum set, the tambourine, the triangle, the electric guitar, the xylophone and the saxophone. These instruments were used to give the music in the advertisement an orchestral feeling. The electric guitar, xylophone and saxophone were used to create the transition from classical to jazz and to also play the jazz section of the music. Rhythms related to jazz were used at the end in contrast with no set rhythms were observed in the classical part at the start. In the beginning of the commercial all instruments were freely performed to help give the image of the portrayed composer deciding what it is that he wants exactly. When the tenor saxophone came in at 0:40, a steady beat was attained. At this point the music was in 2/4 time. Syncopated rhythms were also used by the jazz band in the end to intensify the feeling of jazz as this style of music is filled with syncopated rhythms. A moderately slow speed was kept in order to help develop the peaceful feeling one may have of having a cup of tea. Similarly with the time signatures, the tonality was not definite in the classically styled part opposed to the jazz part. In the beginning, there was an atonal tonality. This, too, was used to give the image of the portrayed composer deciding what he wants the song to sound. From the forty fourth second to the end of the advertisement a minor tonality was used. A minor tonality was used to enhance the feeling of a jazz band. No particular form that is, through-composed was used in the making of the music for this commercial. The music in this advertisement begins at a moderately loud volume (mezzo forte). It then went to a loud volume (forte). A crescendo from soft (piano) to loud

was then observed. The music then moved from loud to moderately soft (mezzo piano). After this it went back to a moderately loud dynamic when the final product was finally determined. A chord was played at a very loud volume (fortissimo) at the end of the song. There were also different textures at various points of the music in the advertisement. This was to give the effect of the portrayed composer/arranger how much different rhythms and tones he wanted in the final product. In trying to attract an audience mainly comprising of the old folk, the producers of this advertisement went with a song that would appeal to their ear and also the ear of the younger ones. The Pink Panther Theme was composed in the year 1963 for the show, simply entitled The Pink Panther. This musical theme, which is only comprised of instruments, is still alive in the social media up to today. Hence the reason many youngsters also know the song. The classical part of the song in this commercial was used to relate to the European person. Classical music is a major genre in Europe. It is appreciated by both the young and the old, who are the target audience.
