Spanish 1

2013-2014 School Year


Course Objectives:
This course is an introduction to the language and culture of the Hispanic world. In Spanish 1 the student learns vocabulary and grammar through listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasis is on listening and reading comprehension and simple conversational skills through role-playing, skits and other interactive methods. This class is not designed for native speakers.

Absences and Make Up Work:


If you have an excused absence, you have 5 days to make up all work missed. Work missed may be obtained via e-mail or in the hanging file when you return. It is highly advised that you e-mail me for your assignments if you are going to be out. You don't want to fall behind. Exams and quizzes must be made up during Seora Higuera or Seorita Navitskiss office hours, Tuesdays after school or by appointment.

Student Expectations:
This plays a very important part in getting the most out of this class. The following guidelines will ensure the best grade possible. Turn in all assignment on time. Enthusiasm for learning and a positive attitude. Endeavoring to use Spanish whenever possible. Volunteering for classroom activities. Be on task for all individual and work activities. Arrive to class on time and prepared. Turn cell phone OFF upon entering class. Mutual Respect.

Attendance Incentive Program:


If you have no more than 4 absences (excused or unexcused) with a grade of 75% or better in the class, you may opt out of taking the final exam. 1 sweep = 1 absence. School Sponsored events are not counted as an absence for this incentive. All students must be present for the final exam, even if the student is exempt from taking it.

Binder with a section labeled for Spanish (May be shared with another class) Composition notebook (to keep track of notes) Sharpened pencils, Pens (blue, black, various colors for note-taking, correcting) Highlighter A Spanish-English dictionary is highly recommended Loose-leaf paper www.wordreference.com A great reference for verb conjugations, etc.

Homework:
Study vocabulary and new concepts a few times a week. Make flashcards! Go to classzone.com and take advantage of the online activities/games. Turn in assigned homework n time. Work that is not turned in receives a zero. Late work will be deducted

Grading Policy:
The semester grades will be based on the Chandler Unified School District policy: Total Semester grade= 1st quarter grade: 40% 2nd quarter grade: 40% Final Exam grade: 20% Each quarter will be calculated based on the following percentages: Assessments: 35% Listening/ Reading: 25% Speaking/Writing: 30% Homework/Participation: 10%

Negative Consequences
1st Infraction: Non-verbal consequence. 2nd Infraction: Verbal consequence. 3rd Infraction: Contact parent at the end of the day.
