The project that I had taken up for my students consisted of integration of three subjects initially, Maths, Languages & Social Studies (Geography & Civics). When I discussed my project with the Physics and Chemistry teachers of our academic team, I got awesome learning opportunities that I could create in my project idea. Here is a glimpse of my learning: Initially I had included a innovative project design for a public distribution system for providing water through taps as one of the end products for few groups. I removed this product in anticipation that it would require a lot of research and involvement of Physics which I was not very comfortable with. When I shared this idea with our Physics teacher, he suggested that the topic Pressure in Fluids could be practically done by students if they created a design of this type. He also brought about an idea that students can take an area where municipal corporation has not started providing water. The students can identify a water source nearby, find out the heights of the reservoir and the surrounding populated area, identify the requirements of a pumping station, and with the help of satellite mapping technique create a design in which water can be provided to that area. The project involved a question wherein students had to search for information of total water available for the municipal corporation to distribute and the total requirement of the households in the city. The Chemistry teacher brought out an important point that probably the amount of available water would be more, but at the same time some of that water would not be suitable for supplying to homes. Some of the groups of students could prepare a chemical analysis report on that amount of water which cannot be supplied and thus I have another product in my list of products to be offered to students for their voice and choice. One more question which I was struggling with was a common project that all students would have to make. A wonderful suggestion from the science teachers was that every student makes a report on rain water harvesting systems in use or an indigenous design. There are approximately 5 to 6 methods in practice. This report could be of 10 to 15 pages which could contain the following aspects: Meaning of rain water harvesting Importance of harvesting rain water Various methods being used all over the world The system that they would prefer and its working Evidences of systems in use in their city Advantages of the method chosen by them Sharing this project with our teachers and getting feedback is truly a WALO for me. The teachers were concerned whether I will be able to manage approximately 15 groups who will be working in different aspects. I am sure with the other teachers help and support, I will be able to implement this project for my students and begin the trend of integrated projects. Jaydeep Mehta
