Conservation Proclamation Week 2: The World Water Crisis Lesson 1 (2 days) Duration: Two, 50 minute lessons Objectives o Students

learn the various aspects that make up the World Water Crisis, including who is affected and what the dire reality is for many across the world. o Students will create a news segment explaining the above issues using the Talking Tom and Ben News application (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/talking-tom-bennews/id444946356?mt=8). California State Standards for Earth Science o Students know that the amount of fresh water located in rivers, lakes, underground sources, and glaciers is limited and that its availability can be extended by recycling and decreasing the use of water. Common Core State Standards English-Language Arts CCSS for 5th Grade o SL-Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas.4: Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. o SL-Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas.5: Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentation when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes. (most likely a visit to the Computer Lab) o Talking Tom and Ben News application (Out Fit 7, Ltd.) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/talking-tom-ben-news/id444946356?mt=8 Instruction (Teacher Input) o Begin by showing students a short video highlighting the dire effects of the World Water Crisis across the globe (http://youtu.be/iRGZOCaD9sQ). o Walk students through the Who, What, Where, When, and Why of this global issue. Discuss with students each of the above factors. On a piece of chart paper (which will be displayed in the classroom for the rest of this unit, write down some main ideas for each of the 5 Ws: -Who: refer to map in video (most of Africa does not have access to fresh water; 1/8 people searches for fresh water each and every day)

-What: only 1% of water on Earth is drinkable; not everyone has access to fresh water, which is necessary for survival -Where: this is a global issue, but is particularly prevalent in third-world countries such as India, as well as in Africa -When: current issue -Why: water is a natural depleting resource that is taken for granted, especially in the United States Independent Activity/Technology Integration o Students will work with a partner (different from their elbow partner, mixed heterogeneously) to create a news reel using the Talking Tom and Ben News application. o Students will begin by creating a script. The script must involve both participants speaking (there will only be a recording of voice; verbal students will thrive with this activity, as will intrapersonal students, as they can write the script and still participate) o Students will then record their news segment on the topic of the World Water Crisis. o Finally, as a culminating activity, students can bring up their recordings on the iPad, which can then be displayed using the document camera so that the entire class can watch and comment on each others videos (videos may also be uploaded to YouTube or School website for a wider audience). After each video, the class can participate in a discussion on what specific issues were brought up in the news reel. This culminating activity will take place on the second day of this lesson.
