List 21: Double Final Consonants /ff/ll/ss


In one-syllable words that end in /f/, /l/, or /s/ you need to double the last letter. The last sound you hear in puff is /f/. This sound is spelled with two fs. The final consonant sound in fill is /l/. The letters ll spell this sound. The last consonant sound you hear in less is /s/. The letters ss usually spell /s/ as in less.

Moving Letters to Make Words


This is a hands-on approach to spelling. First, practice making words with the sounds of letters.

Directions: Student cuts apart the letters on this page. Scramble the letters. Parents say one word from the word box. The child uses individual letters to spell each of the words in the word box.
Second, the child prints the word.
