MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar and left for 4 days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. When the egg shell and the vinegar meet the acid in the vinegar breaks down the the shell leaving the egg without a shell. The 95% water in the vinegar will go into the 75% egg because of its lower concentration. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: TOTAL EXPANSION GROUP # = 3.1 DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 OBSERVATIONS 50 ml displaced bubbles collecting on the shell evidence of chemical reaction Water level 250 without egg Egg was yellow, squishy, heavy, like a water balloon Shell where no vinegar was exposed Water level 200 without egg Partly transparent yolk was visible squisher than last time coarse

AVERAGE EXPANSION (7th GRADE)= 2.7 GRAPH CONCLUSION In this lab we tested the effects of Osmosis. Over the course of 4 days the water molecules in the vinegar moved across the selectively permeable membrane from a place of high concentration to low concentration . Our groups egg grew 3.1 cm which is 0.1 bigger than the class average and 0.4 bigger than the 7th grade average. In the beginning I hypothesized that the water would flow into the egg my hypothesis was correct.

ANALYSIS 1. The acetic acid in the vinegar (weak acid), Dissolved the egg shell (calcium carbonate). The Two had a chemical reaction that caused the egg shell to disintegrate. 2. The difference in circumference was 3.4 cm. The groups might have had different results because of different vinegar levels in the beaker. 3. Cells need water because it helps regulate heat, helps move things around inside the cell, keeps shape, dilutes chemicals, and helps with chemical reactions.
