.11, M.MS.03.05, K.MS.03.01, K.MC.03.04, K.MC.03.11, K.MS.03.04, A.PE.03.01, ACTION: Dribble basketball stationary and while walking/jogging/running, CONDITION: Student will dribble in place, to half court, and to the opposite baseline while maintaining proper form CRITERION: Students will dribble in place for 10 seconds without losing the ball; students will also be able to dribble to half court and back maintaining control ITIP FORMAT: 1. Anticipatory Set (8 minutes) Thus far in our basketball unit, we have covered the basic fundamentals of passing. Today, we are going to move onto the dribble. When do we use the dribble during basketball?...on offense, get past a defender, create space, set up a shot. Why is it important to learn how to dribble?...cant move without dribbling (travelling), get to open space while in control of the ball 2. Objectives (1 minute) Today we are going to focus on learning how to properly dribble a basketball We will work on dribbling the basketball from a stationary position and then progress to moving while dribbling the basketball 3. Explain: Model 4-8 key steps (3 minutes) Movement Sequence: Feet shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent Spread fingers open, use finger tips to contact the ball Push the ball to the ground Allow the ball to bounce to your waist then push again Look Up Cues: Stance Finger Pads Push Waist Eyes Up

4. Questions to check (1 minute) What part of the hand is used when dribbling a basketball?...Finger Pads Should we slap the ball or push it to the ground?...Push Where should your eyes be when dribbling?...Looking Up How high should the ball bounce while dribbling?...Waist

5. Mass Practice/Demo (13 minutes) Explain to students what activities they will be doing to practice the basketball dribble Have students stand up in their assigned spot Review Cue Words (have all students demonstrate each cue) Pass out basketballs to students and have them practice on signal Students find a partner and line up on baseline: One partner at a time, dribble to half court and back, baseline and back, etc. (Transition -) (3 minutes) Have students hold the basketballs and explain the rules for the next activity Have students grab two cones and make a gate (about 4 feet wide) anywhere on the court. Each student should still have a basketball

6. Independent Practice or Activity (13 minutes) On signal, students will begin dribbling their basketballs Walk around and identify two students as the head of the snake (2 teams or more depending on number of students) All students should continue dribbling in place The snake heads will dribble around and through the gates If the snake head dribbles through your gate then you become part of that snake When the instructor yells ROTATE the last part of the snake (last person in line) dribbles to the front and becomes the new snake head The goal is to be the team that has the longest snake **Remind students that they are a team and to go at a pace that keeps the snake together as ONE 7. Closure (8 minutes) It is important to be aware of your surroundings while dribbling in basketball Keeping your eyes up and finding your open teammates is essential to being productive on offense

The more we practice dribbling, the better we will be able to move the ball up
and down the court, change direction, beat a defender, and gain strength in our non-dominant hand Review Cues
