Describe the changes that occur in the observable shape of the moon over the course of a month. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): Third grade students will investigate planet earth and its interaction in space by filling in the blanks a definition word search, and physically demonstrating rotation and revolution. I. Instructional Materials Definition/ Word Search worksheet Rotational Earth around Moon/Sun Flashlight Pencil Inquiry Sheet Brad Colored pencils Scissors

II.

Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) 1) Pre- requisites 1. Fine motor 2. Understanding or circular movement. Vocabulary/ Content - Orbit- the path an object follows as it moves around another object. - Axis- an imaginary straight line on which an object rotates - Revolve- when something is moving in a circle around another object.

III.

IV.

Rotate- when something spins. Equator- is an imaginary straight line. Tilt- to cause to lean.

Implementation A. Introduction Teacher will post a question: How many days are there in one full year? Development B. 1. Teacher will demonstrate rotation by showing a small model of earth, sun and moon 2. Teacher will instruct the students to get up and act out rotation (students will be walking around the room). 3. Students will hold a pencil on top of their heads to show the axis. 4. Students will pair up, one should be the Earth and the other should be the sun. 5. Student that is the Sun will hold a flashlight. 6. Student that is the Earth will rotate and revolve around the Sun. 7. Students will investigate the length of time, and the different areas the sun hits the earth. 8. Students will fill out Inquiry sheet timing the difference between them rotating and them rotating and revolving. 9. Teacher will set up colored pencils and hand out Orbit Making Worksheet. 10. Student will color and cut out the Earth, Sun, and Moon and put a brad where needed. 11. Teacher will provide the class with a worksheet of definitions of the terms learned in the lesson, (orbit, axis, calendar, revolve, seasons, equator) 12. Students will use the words from the definitions to complete a word search and hand in. 13. Teacher will go over the definition of the words found in the word search on the black board.

C. Closure Three Ws: What did we learn today? What effect does it have to our planet? What prediction can you make for the next lesson? D. Accommodations/Differentiation 1. For Sally that has ADHD teacher will assist her with the Orbit making worksheet.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan 1. Formative Students will take turns with the various roles demonstrating the rotational process. Students will complete the definition/word search worksheet. 2. Summative
