English 1020 Project 3: Multi-Genre Research Project This is our final course project the Multi-genre research project.

. The multi-genre project asks you to see, understand, interpret, synthesize, and know your subject through multiple genres rather than a traditional or linear research-based paper. In employing genres as both a lens and a rhetorical tool, the multi-genre research project requires you to be explicitly creative and scholarly. You will need to pay close attention to matters o style as well as matters o research. What is a multi-genre paper? It!s a collection o pieces written in a "ariety o genres, in ormed by your research on a particular subject, which presents one or more perspecti"es on a research question or topic. # multi-genre paper is personal, creati"e, and can!t be copied rom some other source. It in"ol"es you, as a writer, making conscious decisions about what in ormation is important and how it should be presented to the reader. Oka ! this is completel "ifferent from an thing # ha$e "one %efore &hat "o # "o? #s you research, you!ll need to consider your audience and what genre would be the most e ecti"e in communicating your message to that audience. $hat genre will %speak& to the people you most want to reach' #nd why' You!ll need to be ully engaged in your research ( don!t approach it as a sca"enger hunt in which you collect in ormation and spit it back out in an %academic& paper. This goes beyond the academic paper in a "ariety o ways. You will be demonstrating all that you!"e learned so ar this semester. 'ossi%le (enres This actual list o genres is endless, but here are some typical ones that students tend to create. You!ll notice that many could be listed in multiple categories. Creative: )oetry, iction, dialogue, memoir, cartoon, eulogy, prayer, Top *+ ,ist, recipe, song, obituary, etc. Visual: -ap, lyer, poster, brochure, website, graph, chart, timeline, handout, ad"ertisement, )ower)oint, etc. Advocacy: ,etter to the editor, letter to authority, speech, resolution, open letter, %This I .elie"e,& etc. Research/Academic: /hort essay, annotated bibliography, re"iew, memo, report, inter"iew, $ikipedia entry, news article, etc. )hoosing a *esearcha%le Topic+ # strong topic will be one that deals with humanity in a thought ul and insight ul way. This, o course, is huge and wide open. You will request a topic through a proposal, due to me at your indi"idual con erence. In your proposal you should address the ollowing questions0 *. #m I truly interested in this topic' You must be in"ested and it must show in your inal product. I you don!t ind your topic interesting, your audience won!t either.

Is the subject limited enough in ocus' Is there a speci ic theme4idea4concept4answer in which to research and end up with a clear message to present' 5. Is there a substantial human element to the topic' This must be meaning ul or you and your audience and the human element is the key. 'rocess You will initially de"elop a proposal or an idea or a topic. You will then create a plan o genres or research, dra ting, and re"ision. You will create a )lan o $riting 6)7$8 in your proposal ( this describes what genres you will create and when you will ha"e them completed or re"iew. The proposal and the )7$ will ha"e to be presented to me in a mandatory con erence. Proposal: # detailed *-1 page request to research a speci ic topic. This is a persuasi"e document. You must show me that the topic is 9elated to you in some meaning ul way :easible Interesting to an audience Plan of Writing (POW : This document should detail the genres that you are going to create or the project. It should identi y di erent pieces as %genre *,& %genre 1,& etc. This is an important document. 'ro"ucts The multi-genre research project will culminate with you turning in a port olio o smaller pieces that, as a whole, create a ull research experience. You will need to create one genre rom each o the ollowing our areas0 ;reati"e, <isual, #d"ocacy, and 9esearch4#cademic. You will also write a *-1 page introductory memo or essay, describing the o"erall port olio and the o"erall themes that run through all the pieces. #lso, you will need to include a ormal works cited page ollowing -,# ormat.
