Location: -South America -Coast of Pacific Ocean -Surrounded by Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia Who owns news media: -140 state and privately owned TV channels -Government owns 2 TV networks, 1 Radio stations, & 1 Print news agency -Current debate on ownership -accusing largest media company of gathering valuable info & called it to legislatures attention -could diminish freedom -El Comercio: #1 Newspaper that owns businesses, other newspapers, TV stations -Largest media owner in Peru Who controls news media: -Freedom of the press, BUT end up censoring media anyway -Watchdogs sense a lot of censoring information -2011: reform of the criminal code is in progress but isnt official yet -Now encouraging self-censorship -Have laws that control -Are punishments that Official statement about press: -Partly Free -Press Freedom Score is 43 out of 100 -14 out 30 for legal environment -18 out of 40 for political environment -11 out of 30 for economic environment - (On Press Freedom Index) Rank 105 in 2013, Rank 115 in 2011-2012 History development: -1990, one of most lenient presses in the world -1991, President passed Decree Law -1993, guaranteed freedom of press -But was still suing journalists, press outlets, activists -2002, No independent media -Willingness of government agencies to provide info grew -2004, Radio & Television Law- needed license to broadcast -2009, gave way with Radio & Television Law -Watchdogs said there was examination and suppressing of unacceptable parts -2010, several threats and attacks -Defamation resulted in imprisonment -1st time a blogger was convicted of defamation -Restricted circulation of recorded phone conversations
