Publishimg moved to the desktop following the creating of Aldus PageMaker; it created problems such as requiring amateurs to acquire skills that could take years to learn. 2. What are three programs you can use for desktop publishing? Three programs you can use for desktop publishing are Microsoft Publisher, Adobe PageMaker, or Adobe InDesign. 3. Define desktop publishing in your own words. Desktop publishing is the use of software to create a document with text and/or graphics. 4. What is typography, and what three elements of type are included in it? Typography is the study of all elements of type, including the shape, size, and spacing of the characters. 5. Explain the difference between a typeface and a font. A typeface is the shape of letter such as Times Roman or Arial. Fonts combine size, typeface, and style. 6. What is a serif, and how does it affect the readability of text? A serif describes a typeface with extensions at the ends of the main strokes that define each letter. 7. What are display fonts, and why would you use them? Display fonts are fonts designed to attract attention to the design of the font, as well as to the words. You would use display fonts to attract attention to the content of your document. 8. How is type measured? Type is measured on the characters that have ascenders and descenders. 9. Why should you not underline the titles of books?

You shouldnt underline the titles of books because books are supposed to be italicized, not underlined. 10. What problems does use of proportional fonts create for the desktop publisher? Proportional fonts create problems for the desktop publisher such as making content more difficult to read due to spacing. 11. What is the difference between tracking and kerning? Tracking is the amount of space between characters, and kerning involves spacing certain characters closely enough that the smaller chaeracter fits under the larger. 12. In the typewriter world, what was used instead of leading? In the typewriter world, single, double, or 1.5 spacing was used instead of leading. 13. What does it mean to justify text? To justify text means to spread the text across the line so that text lines up evenly on the left and right margins. 14. How many spaces should you use after end punctuation such as a period? You should use one space after end punctuation. 15. Why shouldnt you use all capitals, and what could you use instead? You shouldnt use all capitals because it makes your text to appear to be shouting. You could use the small caps font option instead of all caps.
