Lesson: Grammar Microteach: No Comma Setting Off Additions at the End of Sentences Grades 11/12 Objectives: Students will

be able to craft cumulative sentences by learning how to use commas to set off the ends of sentences, which modify or add to a base clause. Students will learn a new style of sentence to use in their writing. Materials: Overhead projector that I can connect my computer to. An adapter to connect my computer to the overhead. Whiteboard with markers. Students will need pen and paper or a computer to craft sentences on. Have the tables set up for groups of 4 or 5 Activities: 1. Hook/Intro 1. Brief slideshow defining what the rule I am teaching is. 2. A comma needs to be used to set off additional information or a closer. 3. Define what a cumulative sentence is (3 Minutes) 2. Guided Practice Have students try and work out this rule on the side boards with example sentences 1. Write sentences on board without comma. 2. Have students identify the independent clause. 3. Have students identify the additional Information. 4. Have students identify where the comma goes. (2 Minutes) Model how to create cumulative sentences.

1. Base Sentence 2. Add a more concrete description to that base sentence 3. Combine the two parts (2 Minutes) Create a cumulative sentence with the students 1. Show students Picture 2. Ask for a sentence describing the picture 3. Ask for another phrase adding to that sentence 4. Combine on the board (4 Minutes) 3. Independent Practice Students will write their own cumulative sentences 1. Students will observe the room around them - Anything but people 2. Students will craft two sentences 3. Students will share their sentences with the people in their group 4. The students will then give feedback, first positive, then one thing they could change - Make sure students know it is not out of mean spiritedness we are saying things to improve but to help us add to our ability (6 Minutes) Type these sentences up on the overhead. Assessment The students will be assessed by having them turn in the sentences they craft. If they turn in two sentences as I have assigned they will get credit.

Rationale This adds another dimension to our writing. This is a tool we can use in almost every type of writing. This adds diversity to our sentence structure, by having new ways to craft sentences, there is more ways to write. Though it is not necessarily the best for students, other teachers often grade on the form a students work takes. When we know how to use language and the mechanics that guide it well, we will not be marked down for poor usage and mechanics.
