New Media
S New media is defined as a collection of mediated
communication technologies that are digital and
converging and tend to be interactive.
S Constant reality in our lives and affect our daily activities.
S Understanding new media and having good media skills
will help you personally, and professionally.
Types of Media
S Digital- Numerical format based on values.
S Computer mediated
- Cyber Space
- Internet
- World Wide Web
S Most of this new media is web based and has been for a long
period of time.
The Affect
S The affect lies in the hands of the person.
S Because the types of media are continuously changing it
is hard to keep up with the new technologies.
S Affects the way people communicate, leaving the two
parties to choose what is the most acceptable form.

S New forms of communication arent as reliable as face-to-face
communication
S Lack Nonverbal cues, tone, gestures, facial expressions, etc.

S Face-to-face communication is complimented by other
mediums of communication. (Email, Text, Phone Calls, etc.)
S Example: Interpreting a text from a friend and knowing their
tone and whether the message is sarcastic

S Anonymity The concept that identity can be chosen to be withhold or not to be withhold.
S This has an affect on new media because it offers to withhold important information such as
age, gender, race, and nationality.
S Can be beneficial but mostly is looked at as detrimental because of these reasons it leads
to.
- Spoofing Misrepresenting oneself on line.
-Cyberbullying Threatening to harm others by way of new media technology.
S The only way this can be beneficial is if an individual is afraid to meet face to face for a first
time interview, or students participating in an online discussion for a classroom course.

Psuedoanonymity
S Phenomenon made possible by new media and that is
the concept of projecting a completely false identity.
