How the Cold War Started o Theory 1: The United States and the Soviet Union cant agree how to rebuild Europe after world war 1. This started tension and anger between the two countries. o Theory 2: In WWII the Soviets wanted Americans to help them when they were being beaten down by Germany, but they didnt because we claimed it was too far away. So Germany sends over Russian spies to America to steal the atomic bomb plans. The Cuban Missile Crisis o (1962) The U.S caught forces in the Soviet Union building a nuclear missile base in Cuba (very close to the U.S soil). This created even more tension about the fear of being bombed! Long Term Consequences o The world lived in fear 50 years of possibly being bombed or not! o The countries also had to decide to join democracy or communism! N.A.T.O o NATO was the North Atlantic treaty organization and was an alliance with a lot of nations to create safety against communist threats! Warsaw Pact o The Warsaw Pact was created by Nikita Khrushchev because of the creation of NATO around 1955! Outcome Vietnam o The Cold War affected Vietnam by splitting Vietnam in half( North: communism, South: Democracy). America makes an alliance with South Vietnam in 1955, but later withdraws from Vietnam! Afghanistan o The Soviet unions army invaded Afghanistan to spread the communist government and stop the democratic party. Afghanistan had defeated Russia because of all of the supplies from different countries! Korea o In 1950 North Korea(communists) invaded South Korea(Democracy)past the 38 th
parallel. McArther is over confident and his un-carelessness causes China and Russia to supply more weapons to North Korea!
Duck and Cover o The Duck and Cover method was used during the cold war and the U.S taught that to protect us from any effects of a nuclear explosion.
