Basketball And How It Relates To Geometry

The topic I chose was basketball this topic relates to
geometry in many ways but the main part Im focusing on is how it
relates to your basketball shot. The topic has a lot of other things
that let it relate to geometry like all the angles on the court.
The first way it relates to geometry is the arch that you put
on the ball when you shoot. When you shoot the basketball it goes
in the air and when you throw the ball you want an arch of about
55. Basically the higher degree arch you put on the ball the chance
of the ball going into the hoop goes up. If you shot the ball at a 90
angle right above the hoop you would have a high change of the ball
going in the hoop. But if you shoot at a 30 angle it will almost be
impossible for the ball to swish in the hoop.
Another way basketball shots relate to your basketball shot is
the rim and the basketball. The rim has an 18 inch diameter and the
with the ball at the edge of the rim there is an 8.3 inch margin
between the ball and the other side of the rim. Even with this the
arch applies to the shot. If you have a higher arch the more space
there is between the ball and the rim.
Another part of basketball that can relate to geometry is the
court and all of its angles. Of you look at a picture of a basketball
court you will see all of its angles lines and shapes. The court itself
is a rectangle that had an area of 4,700 feet squared. Also the
center circle had a diameter if 12 feet and an area of 113.04 feet
squared. These are just a few examples of the many parts of the
court that relate to geometry.
Basketball is a sport that also has a lot to do with math. I
have just showed you some of the ways that it applies to. But even
if you know the all the angles you wont be a LeBron James. But
there is still many ways that you can relate basketball to geometry
because of all of the geometry on the court and in the shot.
