RUNNING HEAD: AREAS OF GROWTH 2

I ntegrative Theme
The integrated theme for my areas of development encompasses Kouzes & Posner
(2007) leadership concept, Challenging the Process. This leadership framework
describes how leaders are ones that take initiative; create meaningful challenges, and use
innovation and creativity to formulate and solutions. These ideals are embedded in my
areas of development below.
Learning Outcome Dimensions
Assessment & Evaluation
Assessment and Evaluation are the areas of growth that I need to improve upon in
my professional experience. In my elective course, AEDT 562 Foundations in Adult
Education, program assessment and evaluation was integrated heavily in our curriculum.
Artifact G (Social Media in Adult Education) demonstrates LO #7, by pairing program
assessment and evaluation to recognize the best practices of Social Media in Adult
Education. Within this particular area of Student Development, this has been a crucial
piece not only my academic experience, my professional and internship experiences.

In my primary project for internship, The Leadership Academy program, (Artifact
J) demonstrates my growth in assessment and evaluation. This experience really made
me aware of the importance of evaluation and assessment, especially when formulating
future program proposals, future implications and goals for the program, and writing up
my evaluation summary. I have not had much experience in this area prior to, and this
project expanded my knowledge in this area. Through this internship, I was able to use

this as an opportunity to create my own innovative ways of evaluation and surveying (via
social media or technology based forums).

Program Facilitation & Structure
This area of growth has most definitely presented room for both challenge and
creativity. Within the context of the Leadership Academy, one of my areas that I
continue to struggle with is facilitation and presentation. While working at my internship
and also prior work experience in program facilitation and development, I have had the
opportunity to present in professional development venues and/or experience in
workshop facilitation. This area of program facilitation and program structure
demonstrates my continued grow in LO #8.

Program Curriculum & Advancement
This area of development also creates another arena for challenge and creativity. By
having the opportunity to create curriculum and program content for the Academy, I been
able to grow in my knowledge and practice in these areas. The experience of building the
Leadership Academy curriculum was (and still is) a learning curve for me.
We did have the opportunity in SDAD 578 Student Development Theory, to
artificially create our own program that we would like to see in Higher Education.
Artifact C2 (Final Project and Literature Review) demonstrates a mock program that I
have created based on a particular issue around Retention in Higher Education and
Identity Development specifically catered to marginalized population. This artifact
demonstrates my understanding of LO #8 & LO #9. By being able to articulate theory to

practice to formulate a program, I was able to effectively write a mock program proposal.
In this proposal, I was able to address what types of policies that needed to be put in
place, and understanding the governance structure when creating programs (LO #9).
This project really helped me to later in my internship project (the Leadership
Academy) but also in professional experiences as well. By having the opportunity to
create Artifact C2, I was able to apply my wisdom and practice to my professional
experience. In professional experience, I was able to understand how financial processes
in Higher Education worked, and also the governance and issues that surround high
school and community college partnerships. SDA 578 really was beneficial for me to
being able recognize what and how theories was used in practice, and provided me with
some context of how to later develop the curriculum, write program proposals, and
understand processes that exists in Higher Education.

Demonstration of Development in Learning Outcomes
Past (Prior to SDA Program)
Prior to SDA, I was unaware of the immense value of Assessment and Evaluation and
its role in sustaining and maintaining Student Services programs. I am now able to be
more creative in knowing how to structure curriculum that appeals to different learning
styles, and also making content applicable to different types of students. Understanding
and having knowledge of theory integration in practice and program development, creates
a more quality and valuable workshop experience for the student. This is something that,
prior to SDA, I did not have any experience in doing, or the prior knowledge of Student
Affairs best practices in these areas.

Professional presentation and program facilitation were two areas that I had the least
experienced in and lacked confidence in. Through my experiences in my internship and
professional experience, I have had the opportunity to grow in both areas and have
learned techniques to improving in these practices.

Present (During SDA Program)
Artifact G (Social Media in Higher Education) demonstrates competency in LO
#7, in having to integrate Assessment & Evaluation into this particular artifact/project.
My particular contribution to this project was the section on how to utilize social media
in Adult Education and the educational framework that pertains to it. By assessing other
programs and curriculum that used Hybrid learning environment and/or implemented
Social Media into their class, I was able to evaluate the effectiveness of this type of
learning environments specifically for Adult Learners. Furthermore, through my research
and assessment of other programs nationwide, we were able to formulate future
implications of integrating online/social media forums in different functions of Higher
Education. We were able to assess good practices that were already happening in Student
Affairs, and also creatively come up with our own practices of how integrate Social
media into the world of Adult Learners. I also used this assessment and evaluation of
different social media and online education tools to form our project Video Presentation.
By using an online educational forum to deliver the content to the class, we were able to
apply our learning and in turn evaluate how our peers have perceived and connected to
this type of learning environment.
Artifact J demonstrates a direct application of LO #5 & #6, through the development of
the Leadership Academy. The artifact is a demonstration of how I adapted student services

(specifically Leadership Development) to predominately a classroom of Adult Learners, students
that were 25 and older. I had the opportunity to facilitate learning in creative ways, and also to
create ways of directly applying the workshops to the individual students academic, personal and
professional experience. This also gave me an opportunity to develop in my own leadership
abilities specifically through program facilitation and presentation. This was also an opportunity
to collaborate with other faculty and staff from my own institutions (and other similar institutions
that had similar programs on their campuses) to develop and create good practices of Leadership
development workshops and curriculum.
Future (Post-SDA Program)
After Graduation, I hope to be able to continue to fully emerge in these different areas
of growth in order to strengthen my depth and experience as a professional. By
continuing to seek counsel and guidance in best practices of assessment and evaluation,
program facilitation, and curriculum development is my continued goal post SDA. I
want to continue to Challenge the process, and hopefully seek opportunities to advance
in all these areas of Student Affairs.
