1. Strong, discernable thesis appropriate for assignment. (Whether the
thesis is implicit or explicit, is the deeper meaning of the paper clear? Is the essay taking a fresh stance?) a. Not Passing----------------Low Passing-----------------Passing------- ---------High Passing---------------Exceeds Expectations Samanthas topic is relevant for todays youth. She opens up with her thesis in the introductory paragraphs. There are really two ideas herethe motives behind social media and that people arent always as glamorized as they seem via social networking. I think these two ideas just need to be bridged together to form a clearer thesis.
2. Development of the thesis throughout the essay. (Does everything either directly or indirectly relate back to the thesis statement? a. Not Passing----------------Low Passing-----------------Passing------- ---------High Passing---------------Exceeds Expectations Samantha takes a unique approach in her interview. She is not completely up front with her interviewee about the true purpose of the interview. I think if the interviewee knew the real intent of the interview, it may have swayed her answers. The interview did support the thesis that people arent always as glamorized as they seem via social networking. 3. If the assignment calls for it, author gives adequate attention to counterargument(s)/alternative perspectives a. Not Passing----------------Low Passing-----------------Passing------- ---------High Passing---------------Exceeds Expectations I dont think a counterargument would have worked here. What this interview shows is that people tend to post things on social media that showcase only the positive things in their life. I think Samantha would be hard pressed to find someone who argues against that.
4. Organization is logical and supports development of main ideas a. Not Passing----------------Low Passing-----------------Passing------- ---------High Passing---------------Exceeds Expectations The questions flow nicely because each one delves deeper and deeper into the views of the interviewee about why there is a need to appear glamorized on social media. 5. Transitions are integrated to promote an overall piece that flows (that coheres) Not Passing----------------Low Passing-----------------Passing----------- -----High Passing---------------Exceeds Expectations The interview flows like a normal conversation and each question draws out from the interviewee information to support the thesis.
6. Style is appropriate in tone and clarity of expression. Concise but thorough style. Avoids redundancy (in ideas, syntax, diction, etc.). Is appropriately suited for your audience. a. Not Passing----------------Low Passing-----------------Passing------- ---------High Passing---------------Exceeds Expectations The style of this interview is a relaxed, conversational style that I think would be attractive to Samanthas target audience of younger people who use a lot of social media. 7. Conclusion is not just a summary, rather your ideas are synthesized. (Are you answering the So what? of your topic?) a. Not Passing----------------Low Passing-----------------Passing------- ---------High Passing---------------Exceeds Expectations Samanthas conclusion is excellent. She flows from the findings of her interview to the cautions of using social media as a confidence booster. This was really well done. 8. Mechanics and usage (i.e., sentence-level or grammatical issues) and document design principles at least meet minimum-level standards for college-level work. a. Not Passing----------------Low Passing-----------------Passing------- ---------High Passing---------------Exceeds Expectations Document design could be improved to be more attractive to the target audience. I think adolescents are attracted to fun and cool pictures and symbols so this could be incorporated in the interview layout. The short question and answers style was a good choice because it would attract this audience. They wouldnt stop to read an interview that was more detailed and lengthy.
9. Sources, if you have any, are accurately cited (whether quoted or paraphrased) using appropriate citations (MLA format for academic paper). You have a Works Cited and it is properly formatted. a. Not Passing----------------Low Passing-----------------Passing------- ---------High Passing---------------Exceeds Expectations Samantha disclosed that she had the permission of the interviewee to release the information obtained in the interview. Citations were not required. 10. In accordance with the English Composition Learning Outcomes, the students work demonstrates process-based writing techniques that contribute to the evolution of their critical skills as well as the overall success of the final product (peer review, brainstorming, drafting, revising, discussion, rewriting, editing).
