For instance, if we are in the middle of a whole group lesson, your child
will be asked to wait (if possible) until they begin their independent work.

If your child has specific restroom needs,
please let me know and provide a doctors note.

Language Arts
Writing will be incorporated into all other content areas
to provide for a well-rounded writing experience.
Spelling will be taught in conjunction with our new
Journeys reading series, will be part of language arts
homework, and will be tested weekly.
Vocabulary and Grammar will both be incorporated into
writing and will be supported by the Journeys reading
series.
Reading will be taught using picture books, chapter
books, and the Journeys reading series.

(Although Journeys is new to 2nd grade, this is the resource
I taught with last year. My students not only enjoyed
learning from it, they were very successful in deepening their
comprehension abilities and raising their reading levels.)
Reading Logs and Book Reports
o Starting in September, stapled to the front of your childs agenda will be
their monthly reading log. They are to read a book on their level for 20
minutes EVERY NIGHT as part of their homework!!!!
It would be most beneficial if they read out loud so you could hear them
and then ask them questions about what they are reading.

o After they are finished reading, they need to fill out the title of the book
and how many pages they read. Then, you are to initial that they did read
NIGHTLY. I will initial the teacher box the following day to ensure they did
read as part of their homework.
There will be a consequence for each night this is not completed.

o Before the end of the month, they need to choose one book
they read previously and fill out the book report forms.
(Stapled to the back of the reading log) These are the same
skills/standards we are learning/practicing in the classroom.

Math
We will use the math series GO Math
Students will take notes in a math notebook to use as a
reference while working. This will not be taken home.
The large workbook will be used in class for instruction
and practice purposes. This will not be taken home.
Students will use manipulatives and math videos to
enhance their learning experience.
Homework will be provided through the
small workbook in the GO Math series as
well as additional worksheets.
Science
Science will be taught using the Scott Foreman textbook, FOSS
modules, and online resources.

Students will be expected to participate in the experiments, make
observations, record their findings in a science notebook (to stay
at school), and demonstrate their learning on assessments.

Science will primarily be completed at school; however, occasionally
long-term projects will be sent home to be completed on their own.
Social Studies
Social Studies will be taught using the Houghton Mifflin textbook
and various online resources.

Students will be expected to engage in classroom discussions,
complete assignments related to the content, and demonstrate
their learning on assessments.

Social Studies will primarily be complete at school. However,,
occasionally long-term projects will be sent home to be
completed on their own.
