Third Grade Scholars Newsletter

September 2014

Tidbits of Information
If you plan to volunteer this year, please
register in the Media Center. It takes about
five minutes.

PBIS: Starting on the first day of school, our
staff has been working hard to implement our
school motto of showing respect,
responsibility, and kindness. A weekly report
will be sent home on Fridays. Please review,
sign and return it on Monday along with the
Friday Folder.

Homework: It is the expectation that
students will record, complete, and return
their homework daily. They are expected to
read for 20 minutes each day and complete a
journal entry on their reading. This must be
signed by an adult daily.

There are many ways to be CONNected with
third grade and our school. Each teacher will
soon provide you with a classroom website to
hold important information throughout the
school year. We will also be sending
information about Remind, a text message
service for third grade alerts. The Conn
website, PTA Facebook, and WCPSS website
are great resources for information as well.
Emailing the teacher is a direct form of
communication as well.

Math
As we start our year in math, we will be working on
developing multiple strategies to add and subtract
multi-digit numbers. This will include regrouping,
subtracting across zeros, and relating addition to
subtraction. Our scholars will be using these
strategies to solve real world problems. Afterwards,
we will work on rounding to the nearest ten and
hundred. Please practice subtraction facts with
your child.

Literacy
In reading we will be working on comprehension
strategies to use while we read to ourselves. These
include checking for understanding and backing up
and rereading. We are working on asking questions
before, during, and after reading. Please be sure
your child is reading at least 20 minutes each day.
In writing we are working on writing narrative stories
with correct use of dialogue and adding many details
with expanding vocabulary.

Modules
Our scholars have begun their module rotations for
the school year. They will rotate through a variety of
science and social studies units discussing several
topics. In science they will study the solar system,
plants, changes in matter, the human body. In social
studies they will learn about the government,
economics, maps, and US history. We look forward
to a year full of excursions, expert speakers and video
conferences.
