Assignment One: Information Literacy

1. Summary
This article describes Rolls-Royces idea of creating fully robotic ships reality. With a completely
robotic ship a crew would not be necessary, shortening labor costs, and increasing productivity. This
idea also slows the amount of risks taken by and made by human mistakes. Making this idea into reality
is not as far from creating as it may seem being as though most ships today have a lot of technology that
controls these ships as is, from self-navigation to ship-to-shore telemetry. To make this into a reality it
would only take that of installing more technology to already existing ships and gradually over the next
20 years to improve and eventually remodel ships.
2. Search Engines
The other two search engines I used for my search were Yahoo, and Bing. In my opinion Google
is more user friendly, although they all gave legit results. Al three search engines provide you with the
option to filter your search as well as select between images and videos as well. I have always used
Google and prefer it out of the rest.
3. TRAAP
The article I selected for the majority of my information was written, September 21, 2014. There
is no information that presumes the information was updated because it has been written recently but
the source of the information, SINTEF published its information September 9.
The article relates to the information I was looking for completely. It introduces the idea of the
new invention explains how it can and will come to be and presents a time in which it shall be
accomplished.
The author of this article is David Szondy. He is tokened to be a freelanced writer responsible for
the website Tales of the Future Past. I believe he is qualified to write this article based on his
experience and interest and because he used a reputable source for his information.
I believe this information is trustworthy because his source is a Scandinavian research
organization that released this information. I am unaware if the information has been tested but it is
supported with evidence.
This information was written to inform on new ideas surfacing in our world today. I believe the
article does contain some bias because it persuades the reader that the idea of completely robotic ships
are a pro in eliminating a crew because it is a job that no one wants to take on. I believe this can be
argued that creating fully robotic ships is in fact taking jobs away from these potential human workers.
4. Scholarly Journals
Searching for my journals I typed in robotic ships and project MUNIN. I did not find results
with either search. What I found had been similar with journals of robotic machinery being
equipped to ships and new advancements in space shuttles but I did not find anything relevant
to my article.
5. The two articles I found were both in detail giving information on advancements in
technology as far as robotic machinery but neither touched completely on robotic ships.
Neither was very difficult for me to access.
