Annotated Bibliography: How has society contributed to the potential legalization of marijuana?

"Cross-Eyed And Painless." Economist 320.7714 (1991): 89. Academic Search Complete.
Web. 28 Feb. 2012.

The article Cross-Eyed And Painless was written in 1991 and the article deals mostly
with the classification of marijuana and reduction of pain. Marijuana is classified as a schedule I
drug which is in the same drug class as LSD and this class is labeled as seen to have no
currently accepted medical use in treatment (1). The government felt as though it would never
be safe and effective and would make a mockery of the government's strident anti-drugs
campaign. The public and governments opinions since the since the 1990s has definitely
changed and they are at least considering the legalization. The article was written by two
gentlemen from Harvards Kennedy School of Business, found on Galileo search engine, and
also contains the harsh opinions of judges which makes this sigh credible and addresses the ethos
aspect to appeal for this source. The men from Harvard performed experiments on the effects of
marijuana smoked versus marijuana taken orally in a THC pill form known as Marinol. The
patients noted the oral form was effective but not as efficient as smoking marijuana but either it
reduced their pain and they were thankful for that. This also serves as pathos when listening to
the pain reduction as a benefit that was stated by the patients. The article portrays no fallacies at
all and strictly information.
This article is very helpful to my research because it gives facts and statistics on the good
effect of marijuana. It helps prove the marijuana isnt such a horrible drug that everyone claims it
to be. Marijuana is a stress reliever, a happy pill, nothing but positivity. This article helps show
that maybe it will be legalized not for fun but for a pain reliever, for patients who are in need of
relief.
I will use this article in my paper as it helps to show the transformation from 1991 to
2014. It is interesting to hear the governments voice as theyre totally against the legalization
and now a days we are having votes and even having public officials promote the legalization
process. I will use the patients response of the oral form of marijuana to show that there are
different forms of marijuana and they seem to be beneficial for those in need of relief.

Hecht, Brian. "Out Of Joint." New Republic 205.3/4 (1991): 7-10. Academic Search
Complete. Web. 28 Feb. 2012.

This source Out Of Joint deals with the medical pros and cons surrounding medical
marijuana. Marijuana has been proven to cure vomiting and increase appetite on AIDS patients.
Doctors that were interviewed said they wish marijuana was scheduled as a schedule II drug so it
could be prescribed for medical purposes. Some even as far as to suggest their patients to smoke
marijuana even though it is deemed illegal to help whatever their cause may be. However, the
article was not strictly devoted to the positive benefits of marijuana. A doctor points out that all
drugs have side effects and the side effects of marijuana are mild compared to those of other
drugs that have been legally able to be prescribed by the DEA. On the contrary, the article
displayed many negative effects that marijuana may have such the obvious debate that making it
legal for medical purposes will convey a misleading message to citizens that recreational or even
drug use is okay. The DEA also makes it clear that there are over 400 chemicals in marijuana
and their chemical properties have not been confirmed and made safe.
This source is reliable to my research because it comes from research and real studies on
people in the world. It gives evidence of people and their views on the drug. It isnt based on an
opinion, its based on the definition of marijuana and what is in it and what it does to us. It
explains why people prefer to smoke marijuana to take away their pain. As well as information
about not just the positive effects, but also the negative effects too.
This article is helpful to my research because not only does it give me the positive side
about marijuana but also the negative side. It gives proof and facts of various people so its not
based on an opinion from someone who is pro marijuana. This helps show that marijuana, again,
is a positive drug. Marijuana keeps growing into everyday life of teens, soon enough Itll be
legal.
