8.5E: Chemical Reactions

Matter and Energy
The Household Chemicals Safety Manual
The Problem

Although common household products,
including cleaning products, are reasonably
safe when they are used as directed, they
contain toxic chemicals or degrade over
time into more dangerous chemicals.
Furthermore, when mixed together, these
common household products can elicit
adverse chemical reactions. For example,
chlorine bleach, a common laundry
whitening agent, and disinfectant contains
the active ingredient sodium hypochlorite.
When sodium hypochlorite comes into
contact with ammonia, another common
household chemical, these chemicals
interact with each other on a molecular level
and form a toxic gas known as chloramine.
Clearly, consumers should refrain from the
practice of mixing common household
chemicals, as this practice can result in
serious injuries. and in some cases, death.

Guiding Question

What information needs to be provided to
consumers to discourage the misuse of
common household chemicals?

Mission Deliverable

Your mission is to create a Household
Chemicals Safety Manual. Your manual
should provide specific information on the
proper use of common household chemicals.
Your manual should also include information
on the risks that are associated with the
misuse of these chemicals.

Key Concepts Addressed

1.Chemical reactions form new
substances with different properties than
the original substances.

2.Recognize a chemical change has taken
place from evidence-temperature change,
gas production, precipitate formation, or
color change.
