Whole Class Discussion on the place value system. Use of numeral expander display (Teachers Resource). Use print out numeral expanders and students can create their own four digit number.
Mini Lesson Place Value
Number Line-Up: activity designed to actively involve students using place value concepts to build numbers. Use place value to form 3-6 digit numbers to satisfy all learning abilities.
Mini Lesson Place Value
The Place Value Challenge: working in pairs and using all MAB blocks the teacher will give the students a number and they have to create it using the MAB blocks. Challenge: guess how many MAB blocks there are in the classroom altogether. The student within 500 will get an icy pole. Mini Lesson Time
Discussion about days, hours, minutes and seconds. Whole Class activity on the school day. Have a blank timetable on the board and ask students at what do we do certain activities like Recess and Reading.
Learning Intention: Model and represent four digit numbers to 1000 and 5000. Represent, compare and order five digit numbers. Record, represent and compare decimals to two places.
Success Criteria: Students will be able to represent and model 3, 4 & 5 digit numbers. Students will be able to represent and compare decimal hundredths and tenths.
Learning Intention: Write, order and represent numbers to 5000. Read and write five-digit numbers and identify the value of digits. Read and write large numbers.
Success Criteria: Students will be able to read, write and order numbers to 5000. They will also be able to read and write 5 digit numbers and identify their value.
Learning Intention: Model and expand four digit numbers. Recognise the structure of the place value system. Introduce decimals to three places.
Success Criteria: Students will be able to model and expand 4 digit numbers and explain their places. Students will under the structure of the place value system and be able to explain it. Students begin to understand the place value of decimals.
Learning Intention: Read and record time in minutes. Know the relationship between different units of time and choose appropriate time units. Understand 24 hour time and convert between it and 12 hour time.
Success Criteria: Students will understand the concept of time and be able to explain what the time is.
