Born Katheryn Hudson on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, Katy Perry
grew up in a very conservative family. With both her parents being Pastors, Katy was not
a loud to listen to any rock or popular music. In an interview to Entertainment Weekly
Katy Perry states "The only things I was allowed to listen to were
the Sister Act 1 and 2 soundtracks". Katy and her two siblings
were also not permitted to watch cable channels such as MTV or
VH1.
Katy stated singing lessons at the age of 9 and at the age of 13
she began to learn how to play the guitar. It was around this age
that she began rebelling against her strict upbringing and pierced
her own nose. Not too long after that she became interested in a
career in music.
In 2001 Katy Perry released an album named Katy Hudson
though that only reached about 100 people and before
the label went bankrupt.
Focussed on music, Katy moved to LA got her GED and
moved to Los Angeles to work with producer and
songwriter Glen Ballard. She was only 17 years old at
time, and being on her own was tough. It was five years
of living in L.A. with no money, borrowing money,
writing bad checks, and selling my clothes to make
rent.
Having two more record deals fall apart Katy finally
signed with capital in 2007 and later that year
released her first single Ur so gay. The song drew
attention from Madonna and comparisons to the likes
of Lily Allen but her career did not fully take off until
the release of her next single, "I Kissed a Girl.
Katy Perry told Entertainment Weekly "Ultimately I
want Katy Perry to be as much of a household name
as Madonna.
