Riser (Plumbing) A vertical assembly of fittings and pipes that distributes water upward

Riser (Stairs) A vertical board under the

tread in stairs. Not present on stairs with
open risers.

Roof The exterior horizontal or sloped surface at the top of a building that is exposed
to the weather. The ceiling is the interior of
this only.

Rough Opening The size of an opening in a

wall that is framed to accommodate a window
or door. The rough opening is slightly larger than the actual window or door. This allows the unit to be squared up and shimmed
into place. Casing will cover up the gap.

Rough-In (Electrical) Installing the boxes, cables, and making in-wall connections
while the walls are still open. Later, final
connections are made and the switches, outlets, lights and appliances are installed
during the trim-out.

Rough-In (Plumbing) The portion of a plumbing installation that includes running the
water supply lines and drain, waste and vent
lines to the proposed location of each fixture - before walls are closed in with drywall or other finishing materials.

RSI-Value The metric thermal resistance value of an insulation material to the flow of
heat through that insulating material. RSI
3.5 in walls and RSI 7.0 in roofs, are typical
values.

Rubble A wall made of rough stones irregular in size and shape, laid without a pattern
- a typical foundation wall in older homes.

R-Value The imperial thermal resistance value of an insulation material to the flow of
heat through that insulating material. R20
in walls and R40 in roofs are typical values.

Sanitary Pipes The assorted pipes in a drain,

waste and vent system - designed to allow
solid waste material to pass through without
clogging.

Satin A soft-sheen finish.

Scratch Coat The first coat of plaster or

bond for the second coat.
