Diagnosis: Schizophrenia

Diagnosis
An estimate of 1% of the United States population is affected by Schizophrenia (Porter,
2010).Stated in the Recreational Therapy Handbook of Practice by Heather R. Porter,
Schizophrenia is a complex disorder in which clients are out of touch with reality because of a
brain dysfunction, that can come and go. With an unknown cause it is believed to be of many
combined factors which include Chemical changes in the brain Genetics and hereditary, Social
class and Recent immigrants to the US. In order to be diagnosed with Schizophrenia, you out to
have two or more of these symptoms, hallucinations, disorganized speech and thought, catatonic
behavior and flattened affect. People with schizophrenia may be mistaken for people who are
affected by drugs (Comer, 2011).In the United States poor people are more likely to have it
rather than a wealthier person (Comer, 2011). Their ability to perceive and respond to the
environment becomes so disturbed that they may not be able to function at home, with friends, in
school, or at work (Sacreen, 2011). For a Recreational Therapist, the best thing to do for
schizophrenia patients is to have fine hand movements, interpersonal skills, community skills,
and functioning in small groups that is ongoing. Schizophrenia patients tend to stay in long term
placement settings (Samous, 2011).Which needs a baseline for them to generate at their skill
level and conduct a growth while being there. One-third of the people with Schizophrenia do not
improve (Porter, 2010).Patients with Schizophrenia need to continuously take medication after
have been diagnosed with the disease (Comer, 2011). After a period of time people with
schizophrenia tend to cure if dosage and timing of treatment is accurate.

Body Functions
1.) Code and Name b160 Thought Functions
Includes functions of pace, form, control and content of thought. It is goal-directed
thought functions. For instance, logical thought functions, such as pressure of thought,
flight of ideas, thought block, incoherence of thought, tangentially, circumstantiality,
delusions, obsessions and compulsions.
Discussion of Relevancy to Diagnosis
The code is relevant to the diagnosis because in the Foundation of Abnormal
Psychology it states Schizophrenia patients or people with schizophrenia may not be
able to think logically and may speak in peculiar ways (Comer,2011).

Includes functions of auditory, visual, olfactory, gustatory, tactile and visual spatial
perception, such as hallucination or illusion.
Discussion of Relevancy to Diagnosis
The code is relevant to Schizophrenia because visual functions can play a role in their
hallucination (Sacreen, 2011).

Includes functions of intellectual growth, intellectual retardation, mental retardation,
and dementia

Discussion of Relevancy to Diagnosis


The code is relevant to this diagnosis because dementia is what somewhat happens
when patient takes the medication. So that the patient cannot remember their
hallucinations (Sacreen et al. 2011).

Intentionally focusing on specific stimuli, such as by filtering out distracting noises.

Discussion of Relevancy to Diagnosis


People with Schizophrenia tend to not be able to tone out hallucinations and they tend
to trigger their stimuli for hallucinations or illusions (Samos Widiger, 2011).

2.)

Code and Name d163 Thinking


Formulating and manipulating ideas, concepts, and images, whether goal-orientated or
not, either alone or with others, such as creating fiction, proving a theorem, playing with
ideas, brainstorming, meditating, pondering, speculating or reflecting.

Discussion of Relevancy to Diagnosis


Schizophrenic tend to manipulate ideas to big concepts and images that alter their
thinking process (Comer,2011).

3.)

Code and Name d240 Handling Stress and other psychological demands
Includes handling responsibilities, stress and crisis. Whenever body is in emergency
state.

Schizophrenic would sometimes hallucinate or illusion to the max that stress comes on
and sometimes can be dangerous to the individual to attempt suicide (Comer,2011).

Natural, regular, or predictable temporal change.

Discussion of Relevancy to Diagnosis


The code is relevant to the diagnosis because Schizophrenic may illusion danger and be
afraid to sleep at night causing time change to go hectic (Comer,2011).

A phenomenon that is or may be heard, such as banging, ringing, thumping, singing,
whistling, yelling, or buzzing, in volume, timbre, or tone, and that may provide useful or
distracting information about the world.

Discussion of Relevancy to Diagnosis


Schizophrenic sometimes do rhythmic routine to comfort them from their hallucinations
or illusions (Comer,2011).
