Diagnosis
An estimate of 1% of the United States population is affected by Schizophrenia (Porter,
2010).Stated in the Recreational Therapy Handbook of Practice by Heather R. Porter,
Schizophrenia is a complex disorder in which clients are out of touch with reality because of a
brain dysfunction, that can come and go. With an unknown cause it is believed to be of many
combined factors which include Chemical changes in the brain Genetics and hereditary, Social
class and Recent immigrants to the US. In order to be diagnosed with Schizophrenia, you out to
have two or more of these symptoms, hallucinations, disorganized speech and thought, catatonic
behavior and flattened affect. People with schizophrenia may be mistaken for people who are
affected by drugs (Comer, 2011).In the United States poor people are more likely to have it
rather than a wealthier person (Comer, 2011). Their ability to perceive and respond to the
environment becomes so disturbed that they may not be able to function at home, with friends, in
school, or at work (Sacreen, 2011). For a Recreational Therapist, the best thing to do for
schizophrenia patients is to have fine hand movements, interpersonal skills, community skills,
and functioning in small groups that is ongoing. Schizophrenia patients tend to stay in long term
placement settings (Samous, 2011).Which needs a baseline for them to generate at their skill
level and conduct a growth while being there. One-third of the people with Schizophrenia do not
improve (Porter, 2010).Patients with Schizophrenia need to continuously take medication after
have been diagnosed with the disease (Comer, 2011). After a period of time people with
schizophrenia tend to cure if dosage and timing of treatment is accurate.
