Kamakshi
Without an iota of work, the self satisfied in itself, experiencing itself, sans responsibility, sans shape, colour,
traits, characteristics and shape; that brhmam is Siva or Sivam. From it, all the universe, galaxies, stars,
planets, oceans, mountains, plains, rivers and all life forms of so many types, shapes, sizes, colours, smells,
traits; have all evolved by the power of Maya! That Maya power which shows the one reality as many, is
Ambal. We have come in to being by that power. Actually we are not different from the Brhmam, that is
One. But we think that we are different. This thinking is also due to Maya. To subject us to Her power of
Maya, is Her amusement, called Leela.
Not only does She thus subject all of us to Maya and keep us bound, if we pray to her sincerely and truely,
She can relieve us from all ties, remove the imposition of Maya and grant Brhma Gnanam too. To attain to
Brhma Gnanam, there is no other recourse, but Her. It is She who creates this delusion, hiding the existing
One Brhmam and displaying the multi various Prapancham. To get relieved from this play of Samsara, this
cycle of birth - death, and if we are to get to know our reality, only Her Grace can do. She is the power of
Maya. She has to become the Gnanmbikai, for us.
'Maya', means, 'that which is not'. How the non-existant thing, plays merry with our lives! It is never not and
it ever is! It is like the play of light and darkness, Till the light of Gnanam arrives, darkness of Agnanam does
not go. Till then, looking at all the variety of existance, we think that they are all for real, individually,
seperately. Some we like. We desire them. Some we do not like. We hate them. This leads to many actions
on our part, some good and some bad. Thus we accumulate a bundle of effects of negative and positive
actions, called, 'Karma Vinai'. Since this 'Karma Vinai' is of our making, we have to experience these effects,
some good and some bad. To do so, we take many lives. 'Punarapi jananam -punarapi maranam, punarapi
jananee jatare sayanam...'

Kamakshiyin Karunai
Brhma, Vishnu and Siva, by Parasakthi's Rajo, Sathva and Tamo Gunas, do their respective jobs of Creation,
Governance and Destruction, as I told you earlier. We the Jeevas of differing life forms, also have these three
traits. We also do all these three jobs in three different 'Avasthas' or states.
In sleep when we are dreaming, we do the job of creation. In dream, we create many places and people. It
seems that She has created this Dream State, as an indicator of Her Leela. Man has to be awake to work.
When Man is tired after work, he has to sleep. So, these two states of Jagrat (Wakefulness) and Sushupti
(Sleep), are good enough. What is the need for Dream state? The answer can only be, that out of Her
extreme compassion and grace, she has enabled us to dream and thereby realise by comparison and logic,
'that the whole world, universe and all life forms are only Her dream'. So say the Gnanis.
We can still have a doubt as follows. "How to believe the Gnanis? We are seeing so many people, animals,
creatures and other life forms, interacting in Time and Space. How to think of them all as dream characters?"
To remove this doubt we, (that is each one of us,) have the Dream State, in addition to Jagrat and Sushupti.
As we are all Her creations, we create, people, places and events, in our dreams! During the dream, do we
think of them all as, imaginary? In the dream it is all real. We laugh, cry and do many things. What happens

1. Kamakshi Suprabatham
By
Lakshmi Kantha Sharma
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
(This great prayer was composed by late Sri Lakshmi Kantha Sharma as desired by his teacher,
PAramacharyal, The acharya of Kamakoti peetam. It is a song to wake up , Kamakshi-the mother goddess of
Kanchi. It is very divine and very musical. Unlike other such songs, it does not attempt to wish a good
morning to the mother but requests her to wake up and make the morning good to all of us.)

Composed by
Paramacharyal of Kanchi Kama Koti peetam.
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander and K.Vaidyanathan
(This great stotra was composed by Swami Chandrashekarendra Saraswathi of Kanchi Kamakoti
matam(1884-1994) who was fondly referred by his devotees as Paramacharya or in hushed tones as
Periyava(great person). Though he was a sage, his devotees considered him as the God who came to us in
person and blessed us.
http://www.hindudharamaforums.com/showthread.php?t=966
relates a very interesting incident in composition of this great stotra.
An ArAdhanam (homage) day in Tenambakkam -- two o' clock in the afternoon.
PeriyavaaL was sitting on the bank of a pond, keeping one leg in the waters. It was time for me as ArAdhana
brAhmaNAL to get inside for the ArAdhanam, wearing the vastram (cloth). PeriyavaaL's AGYA (order) for me,
calling me by his clap of hands, to sit near him with a piece of paper and pen. The pen and paper were
brought at once! PeriyavaaL started uttering Sanskrit words one by one. At some points, just telling me the
meaning and asking me to produce the Sanskrit padam (word), when the words formed a line, a beautiful
stuti called 'Durga Pancharatnam' came up. [Svetasvara Upanishad sAram (essence)]. Each shloka (verse)
ends with 'mAM pAhi vi Sarveshvari mokSadAtrI'. (This shloka is written on a marble stone on the left side
when one goes to Kamakshi temple).
In the middle of the above stotram (hymn) when the word 'You are the one who taught the Gita' (upadiSTagItA) came up, looking at my considering it for a kSaNam (moment), he asked, "Why, does it seem incorrect
to you to say that Kamakshi did Gitopadesham?" I kept quiet with a smile.
Forthwith an AGYA clapping hands to bring the Gita bhashyam (commentary) book. The next moment came
