Kentucky

Introduction
Listener Relative Link: We, as university students are surrounded by people of multiple races,
ethnicities, and places of origin.
Speaker Credibility: This research was conducted through scholarly articles, interviews, polls,
and several hours of observation.
Thesis Statement: Chinese exchange students face many problems when coming to America to
study and are a group that is heavily stereotyped against.

Body
I.

I have collected two describing artifacts that showcase some common stereotypes
about Chinese exchange students.
A. Chinese exchange students face multiple academic stereotypes.
1. This image shows a common stereotype about Asian students in general, let
alone Chinese exchange students.
B. Chinese exchange students also face many social stereotypes.
1. This image shows how even workplaces and the media promotes Asian
stereotypes, and that stereotyping is not limited other students.

Transition Statement: These show some common stereotypes that I am sure you have all heard
or seen before. Now, we can explore these stereotypes and see how they are not necessarily true.
II.

During research, many things have been learned about the struggles of Chinese
exchange students.
A. In polling, the most commonly stated stereotypes about Chinese students were
these.
1. Chinese students are only good at math and science.
2. Chinese students think they are better than American students.
3. Chinese students do not socialize with American students.
4. Chinese students do not even try to learn English.
B. After spending time getting to know some Chinese students, these stereotypes
proved to be false.
1. Chinese students are good at a variety of things, and also sometimes are not
good at or do not like math or science.

2. Chinese students sometimes find it difficult to relate to American students,

and American students also avoid them.
3. Chinese students are often not included by their American classmates, and
because they are sometimes avoided, they do not usually have opportunity to
socialize with Americans.
4. Most Chinese students are enrolled in English classes and try very hard to
learn English.

Conclusion
Thesis Restatement: As you can see, coming to America to study can be a challenging and
difficult thing for exchange students.
Main Point Summary: We have discussed some common stereotypes that are directed at
Chinese students, and have also seen how these things are often not true.
Clincher: Maybe now that we have discovered that most of these things that are so often
assumed are not true, and that Chinese exchange students often want to make friends with their
American classmates, we will begin to be more kind and reach out to our classmates.
