Personal Inventory (5 marks)

There are lots of career options and where do you start??? The first step is thinking about your
strengths and interests. The next step is to think about is how much training you are willing to invest
into obtaining your career.
Just because you love Psychology in school doesnt mean you are willing to invest the 10-12 years (and
money) it takes to become a Psychologist. Now is the time to research and find a program option that
works for you and your strengths.

Task #1 Your strengths and Interests

#1 List your 6-8 Hobbies and Interests from your ePortfolio:
Snowboarding, playing guitar, fishing, driving, photography, travelling
#2 What is your favorite subject/subjects in school and WHY?:
My favorite subject is FN because it teaches you how western society was formed and why and how
things worked. It also teaches you the reasons behind why we do things in society also.
Answer these questions to get you thinking about who you are as an employee to determine what
careers are best suited for you.
#3 - Would you rather work with people, information or things? I would rather work with things,
materials and tools.
#4 - Do you want to work alone or in a group? Work in a group with peers.
#5 - Do you want to work outdoors or indoors? Outdoors.
#6 - Are you willing to move to make more money? Yes, I am willing to move anywhere.
#7 - Are you willing to work shift work? Not as much, I would rather working to fufill a goal around the
clock, construction, art, photography.

Task #2 -Find a Focus Area that interests you.

Review the focus areas book. The focus areas are useful as they give you a starting point to think about
the direction you want your career to go (what are your key interests?). Take a look at one or two focus
areas that interest you. Answer the following questions in complete sentences.
1. Select 1 or 2 focus areas. In 2-3 sentences, describe why this area/areas are of interest to you.

Entrepreneurship, work management, and marketing. I picked them because they are areas that
I'm interested in and would like to excel in. strengthening my weak areas in preparation for my
postsecondary life seems like a good idea.
2. Take look at the Course Selection Form you filled out list the electives you plan on taking that
might help you with your focus area. Are there any other courses you should take, that you
currently dont have listed? Dont forget to visit your career center or counselor if you have any
questions!
I think accounting and applications of math 11 and 12 would be some more options I would be
interested in because its about numbers, equations and balancing.

Task #3 - How much post-secondary education is right for YOU?

There are many options to obtaining your career workplace training, apprenticeship, college,
university, and the military are a few of your options.
Before you begin selecting a career and diving into your research you have to really think about how
much further education you are interested in. Review the following options to see what best suits you.
In 2-3 sentences, describe what one (or two options) is the best fit for you think about time
commitment, costs, and your academic ability. You dont need to research individual programs, just
think about if you are more interested in trades, certificate programs, diploma, or university
I think foundation trade certificates and apprenticeship programs would be the best for me, they are
both hands on programs and both have some credit towards the course. Both of those things I need,
and they are both in my strength areas and they are both areas Im leaning too in the future. They would
be handy to have under my belt.

FOUNDATION TRADE CERTIFICATES These programs introduce you to a variety of trades training
opportunities. Grads often receive some technical training credit towards their desired trade. These

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS Apprenticeship combines paid on-the-job training, work experience and
post-secondary classroom instruction. Click here to see Okanagan College Apprenticeship program
offerings. **Also, SD23s Dual Credit programs in your Grade 12 year.
CERTIFICATE Normally involves up to one year of full-time study. Academic certificates are typically
made up of 30 credits or about 10 courses. These programs are typically taken at a college. Click here to
see Okanagan College Certificate program offerings.
DIPLOMA Normally involves two years of full-time study. Academic diplomas are usually made up of 60
credits or about 20 courses. These programs are typically taken at a college. Okanagan College offers
many diploma programs such as Business Administration Diploma or Commercial Aviation Diploma.
BCIT offers many diploma programs at their Burnaby campus.
BACHELORS DEGREE (Undergraduate degree) Normally requires four years of academic course work.
You can apply right to the University or start at a college and transfer in your first year or two. It is
common to gain specialization in one subject area through a Major.
MASTERS DEGREE Normally involves two years of full-time studies beyond an undergraduate degree.
The degree offers you the opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills through a combination of course
work and independent research under a faculty advisor. The research is presented in the form of a
thesis.

Task #4 - COBSS Central Okanagan Bursary & Scholarship

One application allows students to apply to hundreds of awards. Bursary primarily based in financial
need. Scholarship based on excellence in a variety of areas (academic, fine arts, applied skills, sports,
community involvement, etc.)

to assist students further their education and fulfill their vocational ambitions.
