Classwork: Photosynthesis, cellular respiration and fermentation

Name _Fernando Garcia Arellano _______

ID _A01194533_________

Instructions: Answer the following questions using animations, power points and your
textbook on chapters 6, 7 and 8.
1. Explain the importance of energy for cellular function (What is energy used for in
the cell?).
Because for cells to do reactions, they need and require energy (ATP).
2. Draw and label a molecule of ATP.

3. Describe the function of ATP.

-In living systems: ATP can be used for the following:
-Chemical work: ATP supplies the energy needed to synthesize macromolecules
(anabolism) that make up the cell, and therefore the organism.
-Transportwork: ATP supplies the energy needed to pump sub- stances across the
plasma membrane.
-Mechanical work: ATP supplies the energy needed to permit muscles to contract,
cilia and flagella to beat, chromo- somes to move, and so forth.
4. Write the overall reaction for photosynthesis.
Solar energy + 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2
-Glucose and oxygen are the products of photosynthesis
-The oxygen given off comes from water
-CO2 gains hydrogen atoms and becomes a carbohydrate
-Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts

5. Describe the phases of photosynthesis by filling in the following chart.

Light phase (light
dependent reaction)

Dark phase (light

independent reaction or
Calvin cycle)

Where does it happen in

the chloroplast?

It happens in the
Thylakoids.

It happens in the Stroma.

Is light energy needed?

Yes.

No.

What captures light

energy?

The ATP.

What are the main

starting reactants?

Sunlight and Water

CO2

What are the final

products?

Oxygen

Carbohydrate

Why is this phase

important?

It gives oxygen out

It takes CO2 in.

Stages of photosynthesis

6. Write the overall reaction for cellular respiration.

-Solar energy + 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2
-Glucose and oxygen are the products of photosynthesis
-The oxygen given off comes from water
-CO2 gains hydrogen atoms and becomes a carbohydrate
-Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts

7. Write the overall reaction for lactate fermentation and mention in what cells it takes
place.
Glucoseis broken down into 2 pyruvates by glycolysis; those are fermented to produce
lactic and acid molecules. It takes place in the cells cytosol, and oxygen is not needed.

8. Write the overall reaction for alcohol fermentation and mention in what cells it takes
place.
Creation of alcohol or CO2.

9. Compare fermentation and cellular respiration by filling in the chart.

None.

Glycolysis

10. Describe how fermentation is different from cellular respiration.

Cellular respiration gets the energy from fats, proteins, carbos, and fermentation gets the
energy from broken down glycolysis.
