Lesson Plan:
Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation):
Check attendance by singing students name on SM students sing Here on
SM
Process:
1.Review
Have students stand in their spots. Read the books sound words and have
students put the actions with it.
Review percussion instruments and how to play/hold them; what is the
meaning?; (Shake, hit, scrape) why they are in the percussion family.
2. Play
Count off students and put into groups for instrument (3-4 per group). Do not
give them a choice at first. If this is the first time for students to play
instruments, go over the proper way to use and play. Practice how to quietly
get and treat instruments. Behavior expectations with instruments!
Each percussion instrument will have their own assigned word. Be sure it is
clear they strike ONLY twice during their part in the song.
o Wood block clomp, clomp
o Tambourines wiggle, wiggle
o Maracas shake, shake
o Sand blocks clap, clap
o Guiros nod, nod
o Drums Boo!
o During the verse, have students march to the beat. (Walking in the
woods)
Practice the song with instruments without the music first.
Once the students can properly do this, play with the music!
If time allows, possibly switch instruments.
Reteaching have the students listen to and decide which instruments would
go with the sounds in the book. Allows for creativity and higher-level thinking.
3. Closing
Questions
What are the ways to play percussion instruments?
Why are these instruments in the percussion family?
What happens to the beat during the song? (faster)
Accommodations:
1. Children with special needs may still play with instruments; some will need specific
instruments according to disability needs.

Assessment/Evaluation:
1. During attendance, listen for correct SM pitches.
2. Watch and be sure each student is doing the appropriate action.
3. Observe the students and be sure they are playing their instruments at the
appropriate time.
