Teamwork & Leadership CANYONING

Name: *
Dylan Jones

Describe the task *

In detail, what was the aim of the task? How many teams? What was the team dynamic? Timings? Rules &
restrictions?
This task was where we gorge walked up a rocky hill. In this we were split up into
teams of two, in these teams had to decide when to hold the bag we were given. In
this task everyone had to work together, as we needed to follow one path and be
aware of any dangers, so it was everybody's responsibility to tell people what to watch
out for.

What was your role in the team? *

What did you do? How did you contribute? Leader or teamworker?
I contributed by holding the bag, which contained our food, water and spare change
of clothes between the two of us, I contributed to the team by warning others of any
upcoming dangers and maintained a positive state throughout the team, I felt that
since I was unexperienced with the walk and gorge walking as a whole I took the role
of team worker.

How did you perform as an individual? *

For the M & D criteria make comparisons with other individual performances in your team and relate to theory.
As an individual I thought that I performed well, throughout the hike I remained
helpful by keeping others safe, and also held the bag between the two of us for equal
amounts of time so that no conflict would arise. Throughout the walk I took the role
of team worker as I co-operated well with each other, however some people took the
role of resource investigator as they took more enthusiastic and outgoing
personalities.

How did you perform as a team? *

For the M & D criteria make comparisons with other team performances and relate to theory.
As a team we performed perfectly as there was no conflict in the group and everyone
stayed safe. We were motivated to finish the task and the course on a whole hence
why we did well.

What were your strengths? *

Communication, problem solving, time management, supporting others, physical abilities, confidence, motivation,
resolving conflict, praise, questioning, body language, listening, awareness, creativity etc
My key strengths I found that I had was that I was a good communicator, I supported
others and that I was motivated. I was a good communicator because I warned others
of any dangers ahead and keeping positive vibe going. There were some moments
where people needed help and that was where I stepped in. In general we were
motivated because we were determined to finish and go home.

What were your weaknesses? *

Communication, problem solving, time management, supporting others, physical abilities, confidence, motivation,
resolving conflict, praise, questioning, body language, listening, awareness, creativity etc
My weaknesses lied with how aware I was, there were moments where I wasn't paying
attention and could have seriously injured myself, I also felt that I could have been a
good listener, as that could have also put me in harms way.

How could you improve for next time? *

Make future recommendations for yourself, your team and other individuals / teams.

I feel like in general I should work on my awareness as that was my biggest weakness,
I will improve by slowing down so that I can look around and be aware for any
upcoming danger. As a team I feel that we should work on communication, although
some people were loud and clear there were some who stayed quiet.

Was there any conflict in the group? *

If yes, describe why and how was it resolved? If no, what did the leader do to ensure this was the case?
There was very little conflict in the group and when there was it was very minor
squabble between friends which didn't need a leader to resolve it. There was no
conflict and I think this is because the group was motivated to finish and was
determined to finish the task.

How else could you use relevant theory to analyse the overall performance today? *
Leadership styles, Belbin, Tuckman, Adair, Honey, Margerison & Mccann, Woodcock,
Overall the performance of the task went well because there was little conflict and we
also completed it safely. I think that a big reason for this was that the team style was
temporary and therefor meant that any conflict would slow us down from achieving
our goal. In relation to John Adair's theory we were very task orientated and meant
that we were determined, there were times when we did focus on the team in terms of
keeping others safe.In the past we have worked in teams which meant we had past
our storming stage and at the time were at performing level. As individual many of us
took the role of team worker as we cooperated well with each other, however some
fell into the role of resource investigator for there enthusiastic and outgoing nature.
