students admitted to a COE program.

Catalog Description:
Overview of technologies for children with disabilities, highlighting battery operated
toys, low and high tech augmentative communication systems, software, computers
and alternative input devices and multimedia technologies to promote discovery and
independence for children with disabilities and their families.

!Credit: Three (3) semester credit hours

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK, VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT


The College of Education is a community of educators who provide innovative research, teaching, and leadership in an

I.

COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Curriculum and content for Special Education 480 predominantly addresses Professional Standards 4. Instructional
Strategies and 6. Language from the Council for Exceptional Children. These standards specify the knowledge, skills, and
dispositions that teacher candidates (TCs) need to demonstrate for the profession. The course also addresses Standards 3.2.
Adaptation to Diverse Students and 3.5. Communication to Foster Learning from the Association of Childhood Education
International (ACEI). Standards. See below for more information.

STANDARD 4: Instructional Strategies


Possess a repertoire of evidence-based instructional strategies to individualize instruction for individuals with exceptional
learning needs.
Select, adapt, and identify appropriate use of instructional strategies to promote positive learning results and to modify
learning environments appropriately for individuals with exceptional learning needs.
Identify how to enhance the learning of critical thinking, problem-solving, and performance skills of individuals with
exceptional learning needs and increase their self-management skills and self-esteem.
STANDARD 6: Language
Identify and use strategies related to augmentative, alternative, and assistive technologies to support and enhance
communication of individuals with exceptional needs.
Understand the use of individualized strategies to enhance language development and teach communication skills to
individuals with exceptional learning needs.
Identify how to match communication methods to an individuals language proficiency and cultural and linguistic
differences.
Provide effective language models and use communication strategies and resources to facilitate understanding of subject
matter for individuals with exceptional learning needs whose primary language is not English.
ACEI 3.2: Adaptation to Diverse Students
Understand and can identify differences in approaches to learning and performance, including different learning styles,
and ways students demonstrate learning.
Plan instructional tasks and activities appropriate to the needs of students who are culturally diverse and those with
exceptional learning needs in elementary schools.
ACEI 3.5: Communication to Foster Learning
Know how to use a variety of media communication tools, including audio-visual aids and computer-based technologies,
to enrich learning opportunities.

!Professional Dispositions Expected of all Special Education Teacher Candidates

In keeping with the Council for Exceptional Children's (CEC) Code of Ethics and the Professional Standards of the Hawaii
Teacher Standards Boards, candidates in the University of Hawaii teacher preparation programs for special education are
required to demonstrate the following professional dispositions in all program-related activities (classes, field experiences,
advising meetings, etc.):
Reflects on practices and monitors own teaching and professional interactions, making appropriate adjustments.
Maintains current knowledge and implements current recommended practice in education.
Provides and accepts evaluative feedback in a professional manner.
Models honesty, fairness, and respect for individuals, cultures, and the laws of
society.
Demonstrates good work habits including reliability, punctuality and follow-through
on commitments.
Communicates in an open and respectful manner with students, peers,
professionals, families, and supervisors.
Demonstrates emotional/behavioral control and tolerance of diverse perspectives.
Works collaboratively with peers and professionals.

Students who fail to meet any one of these required dispositions may not be allowed to enter or continue in the teacher
preparation program.

Ethical Behavior: Plagiarism is copying and directly quoting from source material without providing quotation marks
and crediting (citing) the source. A more subtle form of plagiarism, but equally improper, is paraphrasing material or
using an original idea if that paraphrase or borrowed idea is not properly introduced and documented. A student who is
caught plagiarizing will receive no credit for their product and faces possible sanctions. A discussion of Academic
Dishonesty may be found in the UH General and Graduate Information Catalogue under "Student Regulations." Also
see the UH Student Conduct Code for specific guidelines.

The instructor will grade your work and post your points by Friday of every week. Once the points are posted, no
changes can take place. There will be opportunities for you to earn extra credit points to help improve your grade. You
are encouraged to check your work prior to submission to make sure the file or link is working properly. There may be a
2 pts. deduction for any error with the file (e.g. incorrect format or corrupt file) or the link (e.g. does not work). Always
double check!
A grade of incomplete will be given only under the conditions stipulated in the current UH catalogue.

You are expected to be active participants every week. We measure and evaluate your learning through your
participation and completion of your weekly class discussions, online activities, technology projects, reflections, and

checklist$of$what$is$due$each$week.$$Each$week$begins$on$Monday$and$ends$the$following$Sunday.$$You$are$
expected$to$turn$in$your$assignments$by$midnight$every$Sunday.$$The$deadline$changes$only$during$the$month$of$
December.$$You$will$be$notiCied$in$advance$if$changes$are$to$be$made.$$If$you$are$unable$to$complete$any$
assignment$by$the$due$date,$contact$your$instructor$as$soon$as$possible.$$$

!Late assignments will be accepted only if you request and receive an extension from your instructor prior to the

due date. There may be a 2 pts. grade deduction for each day late. If you did not notify the instructor ahead of
time for an extension or if you fail to follow up with the instructor 24 hours after the assignment deadline, you
will not receive any credit for that assignment and you will lose the opportunity to make it up. An extension can
only be given in the case of an emergency. The key is to keep the line of communication open with your
instructor at all times, especially when you have any concerns or problems with the required assignments.

!There will be extra credit opportunities throughout the semester to earn additional points. The maximum amount you
can receive is 10 points. This may help improve your grade in case you missed any points on your required
assignments.
